Racing against the weather
When I actually went to find that magic lug nut key, it didn’t take long. Safe inside the car, etc. However, the other nuts are doing just fine, so I’ll leave them in place until some time when I’m really bored and it’s very warm outside. Translation: not this season.
My search for the rig I built (several years ago) to permit attaching a counterpoise to the vertical antenna was also close at hand, inside a fully packed carton of odds and ends. Now outside, surrounding the mast post, waiting for me to cut and attach several dozen radials. That should happen soon, given the constant downward tendency of temperatures.
The harvest crew continue to race against the weather. They put in a twelve hour day, and now will have to lay off until the storm (forecast for tomorrow) passes. Tail end of that huge Pacific hurricane, apparently. The Bridge is already announcing travel restrictions in the morning (not that I intend to travel).
Decided to assemble and remount the vertical today. Didn’t take long; I’m experienced. It’s hidden in the trees, for no particular reason, and if you investigate from the proper azimuth, there’s a perceptible lean. I’ve convinced myself that it serves to shed excess moisture; my story and I’m sticking to it.
For those who wonder what the harvest show looks like from the dining room door…
There’s a certain fascination: I’ve eaten spuds all my life, but rarely watched the harvest. Sure, it’s mechanized, but they’re simply easing the work that would otherwise keep a farmer busy until the ground froze. For not much money, either. Two days ago, I purchased 20 pounds worth for only $7.00 plus the peeling effort.
