Trying to install a bike trailer, for the last hour. Turns out that there is one bolt on another rack which needs to shrink. Not going to happen, this evening. But that’s a problem for another day. More than a few of them on hand; I need never be bored again.

The problem with old technology is that it just won’t go away. This evening, a sudden need to fax a document; we’ve never owned a standalone machine, but there are other ways of getting there. In the short term, a trip to the local corner store or pharmacy can get past the immediante urge. In the longer view, I have a more kludgy solution.

I read somewhere that one should not criticize unless one can do better. I don’t suffer advice. After watching two new shows this evening, with comedy veterans Michael J. Fox and Sean Hayes, I’ll cut to the chase. I am critical, and I won’t suffer either program. There has to be something else to do before sleeping on the weekend.

Busy evening around here. Since the PCI-E small form factor RS-232 card was sitting on the table when I arrived, I decided to get to work and change out my weather station server. The current machine has a fan volume that I measured at 73dB. Not a jet engine, but loud enough that son #3 has developed a serious sleep disorder, and now plays video games until dawn. My fault.

Comfort comes at a cost. In our case, the household enjoys a good cup of coffee. The proper bean, the proper grind, the proper machine. Going back about a decade, we decided that the “8-cup drip” was actually a drain on finances, given that the last couple of cups were used to keep the waste drains clean, and so we shopped for something better. Not French press; too reminiscent of camping (where I still FP). Instead, an espresso machine was our choice.

I’m ready. After swapping in the original drive containing Win8, my laptop is now ready for Win8.1 to arrive. Had to figure out the UEFI combination, but such things are qualified as minor bumps on the road to OS success. And now I’m back to the safe, familiar territory of Win7. All in a day’s effort.

Pardon me, I’m a little distracted. So many good books to read that I’ve bridged my efforts across two electronic platforms, some paper bound product and a strong need to narrate something of my own. My effort to sort out musical style changes in a Chaconne don’t count for much, in passing.

Today, after waiting for nine months, a new OS took its place in my small family… of computers. Although my decision to purchase one of those upgrade licenses that Microsoft put on sale was completed in mid-January, I waited until today to actually pursue the upgrade. Took me some time to find the emailed receipt (containing the required registration code), but after searching through several different email archives (and calculating the appropriate date from a post on FB), I was able to print things out and get busy.

Today, I played “Maybe yes… maybe no” with the phone company. A school, with intermittence instead of reliable service; my duty was to call it in, and then cancel the call when things returned to working status. Two times were enough. I don’t want to be accused of “crying wolf”. In passing, this same company required twenty-one days to respond to a similar call about a month back, so I doubt they were worried.
