Upgrading, slowly

posted in computing |

Busy evening around here. Since the PCI-E small form factor RS-232 card was sitting on the table when I arrived, I decided to get to work and change out my weather station server. The current machine has a fan volume that I measured at 73dB. Not a jet engine, but loud enough that son #3 has developed a serious sleep disorder, and now plays video games until dawn. My fault.

The replacement computer was actually his, but he purchased a better computer and I moved in to claim the spoils. The weather station required a serial port, so I started ordering on eBay. Today, in the second rendition, I received what I needed. It mattered little that the “loaded” drive was IDE and the new machine required SATA. That’s what extra external backup drives are really intended for. And now the machines are happily (I think) transferring across the nertwork. I’m still hours away from being back online, but I’m patient.

On the other table, an upgrade to Windows 8.1 is underway. Today is the day, around the world, and my download has finally ended. The major restart took place about ten minutes ago, and… (wait until I check)… OK, the new face is “getting ready”.  I have other things to do, so I’ll get back to that job before bedtime.

Some news that vindicates me. Medical research has decided that we’ve been too conservative on our “daily salt allowance”. Get those fries on the table; maybe some lightly salted popcorn. How about a piece of pizza, done the way I like it.
