On guard for food (possibly)
Today, I played “Maybe yes… maybe no” with the phone company. A school, with intermittence instead of reliable service; my duty was to call it in, and then cancel the call when things returned to working status. Two times were enough. I don’t want to be accused of “crying wolf”. In passing, this same company required twenty-one days to respond to a similar call about a month back, so I doubt they were worried.
Although the head count was low in the building, my own phone kept me on task. Desktop colour changes (what seems minor to me is important to others). HTML code that wouldn’t publish properly. A keyboard that lost its accents (until I unplugged and replugged the connector). A serious Trojan infection (yes, Virginia, installing antivirus software is important). To clarify, this wasn’t one of our networked machines, which are controlled by an out-of-control set of GPO. Look it up, if you must.
To unwind, I finally loaded an ebook on the smart phone (the same one that is always turned off when my significant other calls the number). With a tiny font and a single seat on the bus, I didn’t notice our trip across the city.Distracted by concentrated effort.
Supper was unplanned. On a whim, I went over to A&W, where I purchased more food than necessary. The dog, aware of my error, stood guard until the last crumb had been consumed. In a canine world, opportunity is always close at hand. He who stands on guard, profits.
