Making the great leap forward
Today, after waiting for nine months, a new OS took its place in my small family… of computers. Although my decision to purchase one of those upgrade licenses that Microsoft put on sale was completed in mid-January, I waited until today to actually pursue the upgrade. Took me some time to find the emailed receipt (containing the required registration code), but after searching through several different email archives (and calculating the appropriate date from a post on FB), I was able to print things out and get busy.
My decision to upgrade rather than wipe an older laptop was an impulse. I wanted to see what would happen. Now, several hours and patch downloads later, I can confirm that the task was effortless. I’ll put the machine away, and in a couple of weeks the Win8.1 will be ready. So will I.
I was also involved in the addition of (yet) another Mac product to the larder. A new MacBook Pro is installing, without my involvement. I will “inherit” a Mac Mini (to be used as a DAW) and life will go on. In a couple of weeks, Apple will also release a system upgrade, and the two machines will move forward (I hope). While roaming around the paired box stores, I also spotted (and purchased) a USB microphone. No clue if it will deliver exceptional sound quality, but the brand mane (Blue Snowball) is a recognized one.
Over on the gearslutz.com website, the mic received very mixed reviews. Given the number of people who lust after equipment that requires an armoured truck to carry the payment for purchases, it’s hard to see them waxing poetic over something in the $70 price range; especially when I only paid $30.
