The local music store has closed for the day, and I didn’t purchase any low brass. Or anything else. Remarkable restraint. I could have found (yet) another way to annoy the neighbours.

This is just an idea. I may have to start reading more. Turns out that there are a lot of books to go through before I can claim to have a broad education.

I grew up believing that a “black Friday” was far from a positive thing. History. Go ahead, put the term into Wiki, and back come a flood of tragic memories. War, pestilence, asteroids striking the earth and destroying the dinosaurs (I’m not sure about that last one). But we’ve changed millenia, and now, Black Friday is symbolic of hope.

The first real payload of winter weather has come and (not) gone. I was home, in time; lifting the plowdrop of wet blobs reminds me why summer is so much cooler, if you will. No forced time off from work, but the bus was overfull and overslow this morning. All the sardines were peaceful, and within months we’ll have it all figured out. Months. I’m counting them.

Sorry I missed it. There were byelections yesterday. Although the results were predictable (this is Canada), the victory speech wasn’t. JET (the son of PET) quoted “Jack” during his political Address To A Haggis. Gasp! For the record, Justin used some memorable quotes from the belated Mr. Layton, thereby ensuring that the members of the Orange tribe will not vote for the Red tribe any time soon. Not that they were going to. But in politics, the offended nature is more important than the actual content.

I tried to be patient. Really. I mean, last evening, when I placed that book order, I thought that things would be there in a matter of days. Yes, I carefully chose items to ensure free shipping, but the whole point was that it would be fast. And then, this afternoon, when I logged into the site to check on progress, and saw that the anticipated delivery date was “next year”…

Proof that my family hasn’t spent enough time in the organized sports world: We need to use an online service to coordinate the annual secret Santa. Six people, not sixteen or sixty. We tried the “throw the names in a hat and trust everyone”, but it now requires too much effort to get everyone in the same time/space. Based on last year, not even the actual date for exchange of gifts is immune to absentees. Hence the email messages (five so far) to try and make it work.

As seen “under the lights”, steady flurries in a steady wind. As seen at field level, the steady progress of a team towards an expected conclusion. This was the Vanier Cup 2013, as seen from my chair.

Yes, I remember where I was a half century ago. Just getting out of my Grade V class, via that scary fire escape on the end of the building. No emergency; the door was in our classroom and it was part of our good luck to test the acrophobia on a daily basis. There was, as I recall, a single loudspeaker on the outside of the building, and the head nun announced what sounded like the end of the world, as we knew it.

The worst question you can ask someone who takes care of a computer network: Where does “that” jack terminate? Despite our efforts to put order in the octopus, the number at one end isn’t always reflected at the other end (of the wire). And we don’t know why!
