Speed reading or speed delivery
I tried to be patient. Really. I mean, last evening, when I placed that book order, I thought that things would be there in a matter of days. Yes, I carefully chose items to ensure free shipping, but the whole point was that it would be fast. And then, this afternoon, when I logged into the site to check on progress, and saw that the anticipated delivery date was “next year”…
OK. I changed the order. Turns out that one of the books had a six week delivery window, and my intention wasn’t to wait until the book was writtentesting various permutations, and researching things in their online forum, part of the order was deleted. Another part was flagged for immediate delivery, and I accepted an increase in delivery fees. My time is valuable!
Oddly, a few minutes later I happened to read a story about “life” in one of the company’s packaging centres. An expectation that a single order fulfillment would require only 33 seconds. A requirement that the employee walk eleven miles or its metric equivalent during a single shift. Have they not discovered robotics in the book trade?
Not that it really matters. Based on changes in that book trade, we’ll all be using electronic delivery onto electronic devices, real soon now. Or, maybe not. Depends on who you read. There might be some bias in the story.
