Unlimited cold milk – a lifetime highlight

The story that Kraft Foods was  planning a rebrand left me confused, after listening to the suppertime news. Thankfully, I was able to Google my confusion away. KD will remain KD, which means that No-Name hasn’t won the battle for the MacNCheez meal just yet. Imagine the chaos, if a generation of university students were no longer able to find food.

Begging for tickets

New provincial budget. Same old view of things. A financial model wherein the taxable (me) continues to contribute to the limit of my means. Have to give credit to the financial ministry. Even though an election is “just around the corner”, the current plan is to “stay the course”. Wherein a mind-picture emerges, of a big three wheeled bus goes straight ahead and misses the turn toward the future.

A plan to restore sanity

I’m sure he had his reasons. The gorilla, I mean. You know, that bad boy over at the Buffalo Zoo. I’m sure he’d had quite enough remarks about how much better he’d look if he shaved and cut his hair, or chose better shirts. It is regrettable that he chose to bite that zookeeper, but without opposable thumbs, it’s hard to hold a pen and write down your feelings. Or play a protest song on your guitar.

Looking beyond the blemishes on a pretty face

I’ve always had a penchant for that most argumentative of jobs. The devil’s advocate. Way more fun than simply playing lawyer. And in keeping with that, I have no problem with lending an ear when someone else gets into the game. Today, for example, when Rex Murphy headed up to “Fort Mac” and gave the town a chance to present its case.

Green eggs and ham?

Given the auspicious date (a nod to my ancestors), I tried to celebrate with a traditional menu today. Unfortunately, we’re due for groceries, so the only option available would have been green eggs and ham. The work of Dr Seuss is important, especially if you raise progeny, but not particularly suited to a Celtic menu. I demurred.

Fame begat Glee

Dateline 1998. A movie where email is a star in the cast. The commercial actually used the sound of a modem, connecting. OK, the movie is a rerun, and the sound effect garners the comment that “Our children won’t even know what that sound was”. And the response “Those of us that do will have it in our nightmares until we die”.

Run, just a little bit harder

Thanks to an excellent documentary (this evening’s The Nature Of Things), I will go to bed with a slight sense of shame. I have betrayed my ancestors. Tomorrow, I must run for that stupid bus, because that’s how it is supposed to be. Thanks for making me feel more tired than before, CBC.

To text or to tweet

For the last eighteen hours, I lived in a world without wind. Not really, but according to the family anemometer we were in an alternate world. Blame it on the freezing rain. When the temperature dropped, during a calm period, the gentle rain became gentle icicles. And there things stood, until I could get home and (gently) swat the whole mess with a ten foot pole. Let’s not pay any attention to the thigh deep footprints in the back yard.

Awed by the lights and sirens

Standing beside the gas pump (a vulnerable location, both physically and economically), aware of the freezing rain falling just beyond the canopy. Suddenly, sirens and a full light show, as a police car followed by a fire truck race past, ignoring the red light at the corner. Gets the adrenaline going, I have to tell you. What if?

Making it fit

Sometimes you have to make it fit, all by yourself.

I recently acquired a right-angle finder for our cameras. Useful gadget, even if it doesn’t get used every day. Saves trying to get under the camera when pointed skyward. Avoids moving the camera when in the macro mood. Etc. The only catch is that they don’t make them for newer cameras. But with some patience, a Dremel tool and a good sense of how slow to go: now it fits.
