It seems that there is a right tool for that job

Consider me as a reformed serial tool abuser. There. Confession is good for the soul (and the machine). Been ages since I used a handsaw to unscrew a bolt, or shaped a piece of anything with the wrong end of a clawhammer. I’ve decided to go with the right stuff.

Prep time versus eat time

The mathematics of food preparation are skewed. Think about it. Other than a bowl of cereal, where the pour time is much shorter than the spoon it down time, most meals require a larger effort in preparation than the actual meal merits.

No game changing blunders

Tonight, I’m watching (sic) the neighbours to the south, as they work through their convoluted method of choosing a leader. If we thought our last federal election campaign seemed long… those folk take the process to surreal lengths.

The view from here

Ever and ages ago, in that period of my life that I classify as BC (before children), I went to school. A series of them, actually. One of them tried to instruct me in the generalities of weather observation, as part of my job. The finest minds from MetCan (OK, Norm…) spent hours explaining that there were many wonderful things to observe. I recall, mainly, fog.
There are a number of types of fog, each one with its own Wiki section.  Today, faced with the view from my deck, I tried (unsuccessfully) to sort out the difference between “radiation” and “advection”. No matter; what we really needed was a fog horn.

Tickets and rackets

I’m going to have to develop a plan for dealing with winter. Just hoping the temperature will rise to 10C with rain works, short term, but other than tomorrow there’s little chance of this resolving things. Yes, that’s the forecast. Still, I did go out and clear the plow-pile at the end of the drive; enough to allow a “run” to Souris for the essentials.

A call to shovels

Enough snow fell overnight that I had to do a personal version of “A Call To Shovels”. Heavy, but clean, snow on the deck, with a forecast of rain… no choice. With the new vigour of a fresh season, I cleared a path in front and a whole surface out back. I know, that rain will take care of the job for me, but one must keep up appearances. As for the driveway, that can wait. Didn’t need to go out today.

Heritage at what price?

Curious day, weatherwise. The forecasts have been warning for two days now that we’re in for something serious. Red screens, strange warning bells on the iPad in mid-sleep, talk on the radio and TV. Supposed to start before midnight last (a full twenty hours ago). This morning, schools and certain offices closed in anticipation. And, not having anything other than online webcams to verify things, I know that the big city got a few flakes.

Not exactly tung oil

For the last six months, I’ve had a job on my list that just seemed to stay beyond my reach: finding the correct way to treat wood on a butcher block surface. I read, I asked advice, I shopped around. This morning, even before I put in my eye drops, I decided to head to the closest shopping area. And there, on a shelf. The Grail, or as the label said, “Tung Oil”. That was the exact concoction that one of those woodworking forums had touted. I bought the can and headed home.

Failure to understand the weather updates

Clearly, the others in this house fail to understand the importance of the latest weather updates. We may have a snow storm, in less than a day. We could find ourselves obliged (as opposed to the normal state of making a choice) to stay at home while the winds buffet the known world. We might not see the ocean for much of that period. The dog could be forced to shorten his stay outside. Please, could someone help explain the reality of where we are to the newcomers.

Throwing tinsel puffballs

This afternoon, I moved outside my comfort zone. That’s right; I left the house and went to someone else’s house, where I played games. Including donning a flasher on my nose and oversize shoe boxes on my feet. And throwing tinsel puffballs at strangers. I will recover, but I’ll require time and TLC. Just so you understand.
