Time to rest and reflect, while I give thanks. The prep for tomorrow’s meal is done, a day early. Not having to anticipate a sprint to get things ready is worth noting.

During the night, a round of high winds and rain. Exciting, almost… that window that likes to “harvest” water was, once again, wet. And I was, once again, using my photographic skills to prepare the “send” to the contractor. Please, just fix the thing. No more wondering; it needs to be pulled and replaced. Before the winter chills.

Time to go back to the optometrist. Not the one I visited a couple of years back, though. (Had to get new frames in a rush, and that meant replacement lenses). Here we are, and my main eye now looks through a pale haze of flaking antireflection coating. No, I’m going to return to the company that gets it right. “Shop local; it works for me”.

Today, I spent quality time in the kitchen. Or was it quantity time? Anyhow, the morning passed without my needing to take a nap or call a friend. Busy mode, getting some extra meals into the fridge, just in case. Actually, I feared that the meats I had purchased earlier this week were at the “prepare or pitch it out point”.

We’ve recently moved from a large city to a place in the country. Part of the attraction, for the family, is the ability to learn new skills. Including, it seems, growing some of our own food. As a friend puts it, feeding your neighbours, meaning the various small animals that live close by. Rabbits, in familiar terms.

That wasn’t someone asking questions. My very first “hearing” of an owl, in the trees just off to the side of the house. Much too dark to actually spot the bird, but there was no doubt; I heard it call, pretty much the whole time that the dog was leading me around. Cool!

At dusk, wandering with the dog in the middle of the highway is actually quite safe, and relaxing. Any approaching vehicle betrays the trajectory minutes in advance, and with a lightly painted sky to define up and down, getting off into a deeper ditch is low risk. Besides, they were spraying down in the fields, so that trail was not open.

I can count, and the homeward leg of the Great Brewery Opening Trip was today. Time to put in the mandatory fifteen minutes of house duties. I’m not messy (on my own) and it took me about that long. Not counting, of course, the time required for laundry. But, long before the arrival of the others, my life was in order.

There’s a new spectator sport for folks in the Maritimes. Keeps people watching for hours, week after week. No need to catch a ball, or anything precise; in fact, the name “Chase The Ace” explains the game. Sort of. Three weeks ago, I didn’t even know the game existed; now, like so many others, I’ve watched in breathless anticipation for the “turn of a friendly card”.

Let me pitch this as a new sport. Requires a minimum of equipment; the team and time of day are everything. Wait until it’s really dark outside, put the dog on a leash and follow his lead. Up the road, down the road, along the lane. Try to avoid the ditch hazards and low-lying tree branches. When you think you know where you are, turn on a flashlight (to destroy any night vision you’ve built up) and then continue after restoring darkness. Repeat until the dog wants to go home.
