Prepared to plot

posted in technology |

We’ve recently moved from a large city to a place in the country. Part of the attraction, for the family, is the ability to learn new skills. Including, it seems, growing some of our own food. As a friend puts it, feeding your neighbours, meaning the various small animals that live close by. Rabbits, in familiar terms.

I’m part of the plan, and today I set off to purchase enough wood to “define” grow plots. Nothing flamboyant; simple frames, filled with expensive dirt. We’ll be able to spot the weeds before the foodstuffs are harvested by the aforementioned rabbits. Or hares. Matters little.

At the big box store, the staff helps me in my quest for new items. Seriously. Haven’t met a staff member yet that didn’t assist me when I request information. So unlike their metropolitan cousins… where hiding from the client was a required job skill.

In the car, I now have twenty-four carefully cut lengths of “two by six”, a couple dozen of zinc corner brackets and several hundred “green screws”. New terms for me, but the man in charge of aisle whatever was sure that this was what I needed. In the lumber section, the young clerk asked me if precision was required in the cuts. I responded that within reason, yes. He then took it upon himself to CAREFULLY saw the pieces into equal lengths before delivering my order to the car. I’m convinced that these people will see me reach new heights in personal construction effort, just because they care. Go KENT Go!
