I heard the owl call

posted in technology |

That wasn’t someone asking questions. My very first “hearing” of an owl, in the trees just off to the side of the house. Much too dark to actually spot the bird, but there was no doubt; I heard it call, pretty much the whole time that the dog was leading me around. Cool!

This morning, after completing my breakfast, the van and trailer arrived. A brand new generator, just for us. This purchase has been on the “list” for about a year now, and after long pauses, the order arrived, more than a week early. The contractor was on task, all day long. From the installation of the concrete pad, through the crate removal, across the lawn on his tiny tractor to berthing; all without a hitch.

He had to revamp the electrical entry and install the required ATS (automatic transfer switch), and then pull fat wires into place before the actual hookup. The propane installer (originally from Denmark) took care of the placing of two “fat boys” and necessary pipes. Finally, in mid-afternoon, the first muffled roar of a motor. There was the additional step of hooking up a large surge suppressor (I’m the cautious type, and it made sense to do it now rather than later).

Our actual time without electricity in the house was about two hours, from the pulling of the meter to the signal that all was done. We were given a quick familiarization, with the inside and outside equipment, and then left on our own to wait for an eventual emergency. Could be years from now. Builds patience.

That sums up the day. Expensive, and I don’t have my “keys”, but we’re ready to face the cold and the dark.
