Today, I took my own advice. I cleaned my cubicle. Not ready for the photo session, yet (maybe Monday), but I put a major dent in the “waiting to be recycled” pile. Nineteen older laptops, among other things. And with all that new space in the cubicle, I can hand it off to whoever with a carefree heart.

My approaching departure brings many things at work. Not least: a direct request to clean out the clutter. Only fair; I wouldn’t want anyone to hand off to me.

At what point did the sales model (of far too many products) change. What used to be payment on delivery has evolved into “test on delivery” and “let us know if things work out”.

Since this blog is part of my life record, let me add another detail. In response to my carefully worded letter from two mornings back, the HR director sent me a carefully worded letter thanking me for my long years of service and wishing me the best in my future. That’s how it works. My retirement is now a question of weeks and paperwork.

I firmly believe that the “six o’clock news” should start at six o’clock. Not “six oh one” or “five ninety-nine”. In the case of a breaking news story, I will allow minor fluctuation. I do not consider that some people are running around after a soccer ball to be an acceptable derogation. Is that clear? And now I discover that we are facing weeks of crazy schedule derailing. This is wrong, on so many levels!

Let the countdown begin. For real. After careful calculation, and consultation and a few other ten cent words, today I made my decision.
