Historically stupid decisions, again and again

I may be going out on a limb here, but I think Dante reserved a special place in Hades for the ignoble designers that use non-standard (or multi-standard) connectors. We’ve all experienced the frustration that comes from trying to attach A to B and requiring C or D to get the job done.

Is washing akin to laundering?

During a recent real estate transaction, part of the pile of paperwork included an affidavit certifying that the monies used in payment were not the fruit of criminal activity. I can’t claim to know everything my employer (the government) does, but within reasonable limits, things were OK. I signed, and I haven’t had to answer before a court of my peers.

A new class of talking heads

When I was a kid, I wanted to be an older goat. There; an aside for today, stripped from a commercial for some faceless charity. I liked, so I made it my own.

On a quest for the (imaginary) friend’s house

No need to dig deeply for a reason. The seashore was sufficient to sell me.

Not my land; I’ve been watching a movie, on the installment plan. That is, the movie started, but a longish phone call meant that the pause button was called into my plan. You see. We’ve just finished a private screening of Paper Man, starring Jeff Bridges as someone who doesn’t realize that “no man is an island” is more than a citation from Bartlett’s.

Wishing that part counting was part of the deal

How hard can it be to make an accurate parts count? When the number of parts is less than, say, forty. When the parts come in only five variations. When the end user has no way of contacting you for replacement pieces, because the company name appears nowhere. Rant mode off.

The ease of an easel

There’s a new PHP bug, and I’m too lazy to fix it. Will this be the death knell for civilization as I know it? Nah. Maybe over the weekend, I’ll work through the script.

Some things work

My vacation isn’t over, yet. However, I did wake at the regular time, and provided a support role for a ride into the city. Funny, when you ride the bus there are a slew of aggravations that don’t get noticed. For example, a car is a cold place to start the day (in January). The windows take a long time to clear, even with the fans on turbo speed. The other drivers are driven, dangerously driven. Can someone pass the word that passing on the right to insert into slowed circulation isn’t productive.

Going around in non-circles

Sometimes the evening is spent going around in circles. For this new year, I’m progressing; from now on, a certain amount of time and energy will be expended with the ellipse. I remember the formula from math class; now I’ll see if it means anything in the physical world.

Not exactly the president’s man

I have a certain attachment to my local TV news team. An appreciation that brings me back, day after day. Yes, the news might have a minor role to play, but I like watching the talking faces in action. This evening, we were given a thirty minute “blooper reel” after the regular broadcast, and it was good.

A flip, not a flop

Forget the high waters in Australia. Forget the shake, shake, shake your booty ground in Chile. Locally, I had the chance to play with a new camera today. It’s all a question of perspective.
