How big is your village?

Two babies were born last week. A reason for celebration, for congratulations. The long wait over and the beginning of another lifetime. I heard the news today. Better late than not at all, as the aphorism allows.

Art versus craft

I really enjoy the mini-documentary program How It’s Made that is carried by my local cable network. A chance to see the nitty-gritty of the industrial process. A glimpse of machines in all their glory, without any of the inherent noise, dust or need to wear a hardhat and steeltoed boots. And, in time bites that don’t last eight hours or thirty years. The series even has its own bilingual website, where you can ponder on the amount you would know if you watched all sixty-five episodes.

The agony of the cache

Sometimes a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. The situation where we have just enough of the facts to get the story straight most of the time, but where we are sometimes “bitten” by things that should never have been dredged up from the past. Have I flagged your interest yet?

Midterm report card

Another school evening for the youngest family member. She has been enrolled in BI since the end of September, and when I jokingly remarked that we should be attending graduation ceremonies before much longer, I was assured by her mentors that, indeed, our convocation was not far away. Wow, another diploma to (not) hang on the wall. Good work, little one.

Morning has broken

Like the first snowfall, on a new day. Catchy lyrics for a hymn or something, should the need arise. The joy of the first snowfall.

Fortunately I’m poor

Rex never lets me down. Today, the question in focus is the eyeglazing topic of a tax correction aimed at income trusts. This has caused a very stressful condition in many people that can be summed up as “the government has done me wrong”. Not to be confused with “the government is wrong” or “I’m wrong about the government”. No need for confusion on any of these issues.

Never too cool outside

This whole get the place ready for winter is taking far too long. I mean, it’s one thing after another. First the annual warm spell before the cool spell didn’t happen; is that what global warming is all about?

Quiet day around the office

Nothing like having the place to yourself, know what I mean. The others in the office are someplace else, so I can really rule the roost. Be the big dog for a change. Get some work done.

Some things are carved in stone, don’t you know?

There it is, that “P” word in Island politics. For those who think that the “P” word hasn’t been in style for a long time, I’ll refer you to the proper reference in just a few lines. For now, let’s just say that there’s nothing to see here, move along now.

Needle and no damage done

I’ve got my health insurance for the coming winter. Today is vaccination time, against the nasty flu bug, and if the past three years are any sort of model, I should expect to be healthy all winter long.
