Some things are carved in stone, don’t you know?

There it is, that “P” word in Island politics. For those who think that the “P” word hasn’t been in style for a long time, I’ll refer you to the proper reference in just a few lines. For now, let’s just say that there’s nothing to see here, move along now.

Where were we? Oh yes, patr***ge. The CBC archive has a few choice bits to offer up: http://archives.cbc.ca/IDD-1-73-906/politics_economy/elections_pei/ but for those of you from away, remember that the politician is your friend (as long as you vote correctly.

This time around, a person who would like to be a candidate in any future election, should one be called, is chosen/elected by the membership of a riding group as their choice. The person is in safe company, a room full of like-thinking, dues-paying adults, and a speech to celebrate the occasion is made. A warning of the winds of change, when brooms would sweep out the old and make room for the new. Political change is a wonderful thing. New ideas. New faces. Indeed.

Elsewhere, after the media have reported the euphorious speech, the leader of the party is asked to comment. Well, the PC trumps the P (politically correct trumps the patron***) oops, I almost said the word. Anyhow, now the riding committee is in deep doo-doo. That person won’t doo-doo at all. We need someone who won’t think like those that came before. Politicians are your friend, no matter how you vote. Your job is safe (sort of).

I stand in awe. How to smear doo-doo all over things when there isn’t even an election in view. Now all we have to do is get rid of the guys with the mickeys of rum in the trunk of the car on election night, and democracy is safe.
