Apply sparingly, said everyone

I’m at a loss for words. Last evening, I noted the arrival of an individual on our back deck. Neither man nor beast, but quiet and polite. This morning, we found the “body”, broken in pieces, lying there. Was he (it) a victim of climate change, or something more sinister. I don’t want to notify the authorities; they’d want to know if I’d offered suitable shelter. The enigma.

A move from luxury to welcome

This morning marked the first “real” snowfall since the start of the season. When that snowblowing behemoth turned into the driveway, somewhere before coffee time, the contracted service moved from luxury to downright welcome. If I’d had to face clearing a path with my trusted manual shovel, I might not have had the same sense of seasonal pleasure.

Roll it into a ball

Let’s set the “storm chips” joking aside, although I did buy a packaged potato product while over to the local store this afternoon. It leapt into my arms, along with the milk and other stuff, bought just because the need could arise. We’re on storm alert, and when flurries changed to heavy snowfall around suppertime, the only member of the household who seemed to be offput by the weather was the dog. He HAS to go outside, if you get my drift, into the drift. He doesn’t seem impressed by the experience.

When the snow falls, down there

Do you remember the terrible storm we had? Actually, no. Once you’ve cleaned up the mess, life goes on. We do try to name the memorable ones, but (like faces from my Grade one class), little memory subsists after a short period of time.

A dart forth to seed-feed

Boomer called it: a snow day for everybody. Right on schedule, just before dawn, snow started, followed by brisk winds. When even the plows are called back to the barn, what can you do except enjoy the ride? From time to time, things cleared enough to see down to the shoreline; great waves!

Biggest gusts yet

A new wind record, as the cups spun up to 68 kph this morning. There was little doubt that conditions were windy, when the dog refused to go outside and puddled in fear. Wait until later in the week, when we’re promised even better. Not exactly kite weather, and the sea was white, as far as the eye could see (not far, what with the driving rain, but that’s anothconditioner story).

Like a cloak of invisibility

This time, the forecast was accurate. Snow started falling around daybreak, and as I write, things continue. Calmly. This is a fine powder; exactly what a skier might wish for. I’m a flatlander, so I’ll never know more. Instead, we waited until after lunch, and made a short trip to the beach.

All is calm

A familiar melody, with familiar words. The third line, in particular, seems pertinent: “All is calm”. That’s the summation of life in the country. Just a year ago, we were still in the metropolitan mode, with the clan assembled in the common area. This time around, fewer of “the team” are present, but we hold to the same fundamentals.

The view from here

Ever and ages ago, in that period of my life that I classify as BC (before children), I went to school. A series of them, actually. One of them tried to instruct me in the generalities of weather observation, as part of my job. The finest minds from MetCan (OK, Norm…) spent hours explaining that there were many wonderful things to observe. I recall, mainly, fog.
There are a number of types of fog, each one with its own Wiki section.  Today, faced with the view from my deck, I tried (unsuccessfully) to sort out the difference between “radiation” and “advection”. No matter; what we really needed was a fog horn.

Tickets and rackets

I’m going to have to develop a plan for dealing with winter. Just hoping the temperature will rise to 10C with rain works, short term, but other than tomorrow there’s little chance of this resolving things. Yes, that’s the forecast. Still, I did go out and clear the plow-pile at the end of the drive; enough to allow a “run” to Souris for the essentials.
