Emphatically undecided

My recent decision to add AIS and ADS-B capabilities took an interesting turn this month. I had figured on dedicating a Raspberry Pi to the tasks, but a little nudge from a friend pointed out that the industry likes to involve volunteers; I asked, and I received.

Quiet is the word

Yes, the neighbours voted. No, the result wasn’t the predicted one (at least according to mainstream media). Maybe the future will be without crisis. Any more questions?

Quiver with anticipation

Strangely, the land was calm. After fifteen months of “he said vs she said”, the chatter ceased, and the nation went on task. Today, the neighbours are voting; the rest of us (as Tim Curry stated so well, back in 1975) “quiver with anticipation”. We won’t know how things are going until midnight, locally. Maybe not even then, given that one candidate has put the rest on notice about how a decision to accept will depend on the results. Ain’t never been an election quite like this!

No need to tilt or whirl

“Sunny and 7C in a flat calm”; the answer to the weather this afternoon. Or as I look on it, pretty nice, considering that winter could begin at any moment. Not this moment, but any other…

The near occasions of civil law

I may have found a way to lessen the stress of “jumping forward and falling back”. Ignore the clocks around me. Now if I can convince the dog that it works for everyone in the house.

Forgotten (or parked)

I do appreciate when someone does a job well. Even more so, when they’re working with “my” stuff; today the technical team from the drapery store showed up, as scheduled. No wasted time here. In, remove coats, remove blind, store it carefully away, comment on the lovely view and the great weather, leave. In that order. I could have futzed around and (possibly) damaged the mechanism or the material. They just did the job and got back on the road. Yes, they’ll be invited back, when the maintenance job on the big door has been completed.

There should be an app for that

Although I didn’t know the teacher well, the request seemed like a good task for my skill set. Could I write a script that would allow using the classroom computer to pick up email? Sure, but why? Seems that the original script had vanished…

A flight data stream

Seems like a long time ago, now, when we used to share the unused CPU cycles with others to get jobs done. That whole SETI thing, for example; while the screen saver did whatever it was required to do, your office computer also crunched numbers for a crowd-sourced project. Not sure if they ever found anything…

The retro catalogue

In today’s mail, I received something that is anachronistic: a catalogue. I appreciated the sentiment, but my approach to “retail” has evolved.

That long, long last two minutes of the game

Having watched professional sports on TV, I have a healthy respect for the “elastic clock”. That’s where two teams are close in point count, and the timer shows, for example, two minutes remaining. In the time it takes to play through to the final whistle, I can get my laundry started, prepare supper and convince the dog that our walk really should be delayed.
