When I was younger, I didn’t even know where the Rock was. Now I watch their weather stories. And boy, ob boy, do they get weather! Summer, fall, winter with a vengeance. Blizzard today with half a metre of snow moving at speeds not legal on the highway. I’m glad we dodged that bullet, although the freezing rain warning we’ve received as a compromise gives pause.

While looking through some old photos this afternoon, I spotted a former neighbour. Little matter that I hadn’t seen the man in four decades, because in the photo, he looked just the way I remembered him. Maybe that’s how memory works; a frozen gallery, not subject to the rigours of changing morphology. In case science hasn’t got this one figured out, I’ll claim credit in advance.

I have an idea for a great movie. A blockbuster. The CBC is reporting that a pod of killer whales is trapped in the ice of Hudson’s Bay. Imagine going up there with chainsaws and cutting a series of holes in the ice, leading the whales toward open water. For a climax, we could get an icebreaker…

Technology brings its own frustrations. And, its own rewards, occasionally. This evening, I’m grinning from ear to ear.

One more reason to stay at home: I might get sick.
Simple sentence, complex condition. Today’s news points out that the health insurance you purchase before “going abroad” might not pay the bill should you ever be in need. The insurers will (not might) look for any reason to avoid a hit to their profit margin, and if there is a way to invalidate your status… hey, nobody said insurance was a good deal for anyone other than the insurer.

A new season of Republic of Doyle starts in a few hours time, and I’m looking forward to that. If you haven’t caught the series, get on over to CBC. Our visit to St. John’s during the summer of 2011 was cool, because we’d already visited virtually.

Fifteen years ago, the world froze. Not here, but down in the Montreal area, time halted (and they still haven’t recovered, I suspect). Ice, everywhere. It could happen again…

Something else to add to my list of “probably impossible” tasks: applying one of those plastic screen protectors to a tablet computer. Not the application, per se; the application without introducing a whole 3D layer of bubbles.

As a believer in recycling, I try to do my part. Blue box: check. Reduce packaging and bagging: check. Send back the empty bottles: check.

Attention, advertisers. The use of an asterisk does not remove responsibility.
Case in point. After searching for that eyedrop prescription I received several months ago, and finding it (everything in its place, etc.) I decided to nip on over to the pharmacy for a refill of my witches brew. And, I verified the hours of business, on the web. And I went out (despite the windchill that hovers around -33C right now). And they were closed. Back at home, I re-verified the information on the hours of business. And spotted an asterisk. Effectively, today was not like other days. By tomorrow, the asterisk should be gone.
