Old school cough remedies
Fifteen years ago, the world froze. Not here, but down in the Montreal area, time halted (and they still haven’t recovered, I suspect). Ice, everywhere. It could happen again…
Meanwhile, zap forward to the “now” where people have colds. So many people, in fact, that the pharmacies have run short of over-the-counter syrups. I decided to be a proactive, and if you happen to have a need, there are still folk remedies. Every bit as effective, I suspect.
- Drink hot water. Or tea. Or rum and something. It’s the hot that counts.
- Salty hot water (think of it as a maritime version of the above).
- Warm honey. Although bees are rare at this time of year, the local market might be able to provide.
- Lemon juice, added to warm water. I sense that “warm” is the key ingredient in all of the above.
- Chopped onions mixed with honey. Again, the local farmers’ market is your resource. The taste is an acquired one.
And that’s all I have to offer. I don’t have a cough (I may be the only one in the house; even the dog is noisier than usual).
I watched the recent Sherlock Holmes movie (the Robert Downey version) this afternoon, and the scenery was wonderful. Especially that castle with the waterfall… a tribute to how we can be tricked by cinematic effect. There is no such castle, and the waterfall is also a figment of the imagination. The industry has come a long way from the days of King Kong.
