He only bled a little

Social media has a great distraction, today. On a flight due to depart Chicago, security dragged a man from his seat and deplaned the would-be passenger. Blood from a split lip and a weak excuse from the airline. They had employees that needed to deadhead, and paying passengers are such an aggravation when you are trying to run a transportation firm.

The benefits of warming weather

An early spring, by all accounts. As proof, I note that we’ve already transported three squirrels to new homes in the primeval forest, several small rivers away. The running water may slow the return to our bird feeders for a bit. Unless, as I suspect, the species understands the concept of highway bridges. We’ll see.

When the news IS the news

Shortly after midnight (technically, today) the Oscar ceremonies wrapped up. The big prize of the evening was awarded, for Best Picture… twice. One for the history books, in the entertainment section. Some serious onstage embarrassment. Out in the “real world”, the POTUS turned the mirror back in his direction, by tweeting that the presenters had spent too much time mocking him and not enough time checking the results.

Two much to watch

Oscar evening really requires two television sets… when the timing puts the show in competition with the Scotties final. The hotel room remote requires patience in getting from one channel to the other. I’m missing important stones, after deciding to watch the real star of Hidden Figures being brought onstage.

Know the season

Watching the dog slide sideways, up onto the sidewalk was proof; clearly, what you can’t see can affect you. More freezing rain overnight served to cut the electricity for many and turn the roads and walking spaces into an obstacle course.

Make the stones stay

A little bit of freezing rain. No big deal, except… every move outside must be measured. We were out for a family supper, which means that time passed quickly. When the weather warning went out, so did I.

So many variations on the theme

Today marked a personal combination of gestalt with great expectations. Let me explain.

Despite my preference for solo efforts, I agree that some of the best outcomes are the fruit of combined input. Music, for example, where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Symphonic, or even emsemble gestalt. And, around here (in my family), there are great expectations of how good the music would be, if only I would “play well with others”… the kindergarten model.

Fasten your seatbelts

Long before daylight, the launch vehicle lined up with the end of the ramp. Seatbelts fastened. We were off, for another great midwinter adventure.

Standing by the stones

No stones around here. Some little rocks, maybe. Pebbles, to be sure. But based on a year of observation, not a single stone of any importance. And certainly none standing around.

Forced darkness, for some

Enough. Time to go home. With the assistance of son #3, who stayed the night with one of those magic pass cards that hotel employees keep around, we were up before daylight and had the car completely packed without a hiccup. On the road by 05h30.  At that hour, you have the full attention of the desk staff.
