Fasten your seatbelts

posted in travel |

Long before daylight, the launch vehicle lined up with the end of the ramp. Seatbelts fastened. We were off, for another great midwinter adventure.

Actually, there was nothing extraordinary (other than the point that we didn’t dilly-dally). The road is long, but familiar. We crossed the province, crossed the bridge, crossed another province. More of the same, before that final bridge that took us back into very familiar territory. Two tanks of gas and nine hours of steady progress. The pavement was bare, the whole way. Not exactly how most of us envision mid-February.

Even the dog took it all in stride. No meal breaks. A soundtrack that seemed very Adele. Even if it’s only been three months since the last time, getting to see “the kids” is reason enough for the break in our routine.

The dog and I have the hotel room to ourselves for the next couple of hours. I’m trying to keep spirits calm (because I don’t want to go for “another walk around the block, Dog”.

Went by a local electronics store, before supper. Have my Cat5, at a fair price. It’s all about knowing where to go. Tomorrow (maybe) the music stores. Just because I can. And a few communal meals. Not quite home-cooking, but a notch up from fast food.

The hotel has free wifi, and a fake coffee machine. Clean linen. We’re right downtown (why are there so many sirens?). In the short walk back from the restaurant, I saw more people than I would during a week at home.
