In need of a storm

In the (modern) historical context, getting on the cover of Rolling Stone has been something to sing about. Hey, one group based their career (sic) on just that. Which is why the emotional overload of a Toronto actor/rapper who got “bumped” this week so that the magazine could pay tribute to the passing of an Oscar-winning actor is, simply, disingenuous. Grow up, duck!

Ready to celebrate winter?

Watching (or reading, or hearing) the news is a bit of an uneven sleigh ride. Today, in side by side stories, I learned that Conrad Black has been stripped of the Order of Canada; meanwhile, the Keystone XL pipeline, which will aid in stripping the landscape of one province of Canada, is getting the green light. Happy and sad. Sweet and sour. Something for everyone, as long as you keep low standards.

Limited response to the nordicity slogan

Every once in a while, I have a moment of fortuitous something. Call it what you will; my leaving for work at the scheduled time saved me hours. The snow storm that the Environment Canada people “forgot to tell the mayor about”, although nothing more than some fine powder, brought this city to its knees. So much for “Nordicity”. Hills that couldn’t be climbed. Cars that couldn’t get out (or cars that could). The roads were a mess, and in some cases a trip across the city turning into hours of challenge. My own bus had a seven minute delay. Yes, I noticed.

Too many butterflies for my taste

Just what I feared; after almost two weeks “on vacation”, the whole return to my cubicle trip is not appealing to me. That PWE (Protestant Work Ethic) isn’t as strong as other instincts, and I could join the dog on the couch without any sense of guilt. The lack of income might bother him (his bag of kibble is nearly empty), but he’d have a friend at hand.

Retelling the Parker-Barrow tale

Dog math. That’s where two increases everything by much more than twice. Something as simple as going outside. A dog does prefer to be on the other side of any given door. Put two dogs together, and you may lose count of the number of times a door has to be opened. Just so you know.

Could the dog tow a dragline?

Perhaps I can adapt a small dragline shovel and harness it to the dog. Then, when he barrels out to bark at passersby, the driveway can be cleared at the same time. Too much energy on his side of the couch (and not enough on mine).

Cold distraction

Write what you know. Frequent advice to anyone who wants to, well, write. In my case, I know about the weather and what’s on TV. Might not capture the heart of every reader, but until I make the leap to Astounding Tales Of Whatever, that’s where we will find ourselves. Day after day after day. Don’t be frightened.

Tie down the cat

The first real payload of winter weather has come and (not) gone. I was home, in time; lifting the plowdrop of wet blobs reminds me why summer is so much cooler, if you will. No forced time off from work, but the bus was overfull and overslow this morning. All the sardines were peaceful, and within months we’ll have it all figured out. Months. I’m counting them.

Another season to survive

I left for work, in darkness, and I came very close to falling on a patch of black ice. Later, the flurries started, thickened and finally ceased. By the end of the work day, the only remaining evidence of our first day of winter was in areas of deep shadow. And with another 300 cm of white stuff “in view”, I’m already ready for the end of it. So much for my nordic sense.
