Ready to celebrate winter?
Watching (or reading, or hearing) the news is a bit of an uneven sleigh ride. Today, in side by side stories, I learned that Conrad Black has been stripped of the Order of Canada; meanwhile, the Keystone XL pipeline, which will aid in stripping the landscape of one province of Canada, is getting the green light. Happy and sad. Sweet and sour. Something for everyone, as long as you keep low standards.
And with that, let’s all focus on more important things. For example, will there be a major snow storm on the US Eastern Seaboard, in time for the Superbowl? If I was a gambler, I’d want to know what the “spread” might be (and that has nothing to do with accumulated snow). I think it would be good for the great American tailgate party to require mukluks and mitts.
Carnaval starts this evening. The first crowning of a Queen (Boss Dutchess?) in eighteen years. Fireworks to follow. Given the need to dress for the weather, she will receive a tuque, rather than a ring around the forehead. Supposed to be warmer. If I wasn’t so content in my cocoon, I’d be anxious to go and stand with thousands of others, singing a familiar refrain and profiting from the risk of frostbite. I’m not that anxious…
In fact, unless you seek it out, the whole Carnaval scene is out of sight, for the out of mind. Most of the good stuff either happens at night, or down by the river where the icepack flows.
