I don’t care. Even if the probs announce frost in the next few hours, I’m through with the white season. The “all other seasons” tires are in the car, ready for the big change-over tomorrow morning. In the field below here, the disc harrow is turning those furrows from last season into something flat and filled with potential – clover, perhaps?

Based on this morning’s view from my window, the weather folk down in the “city” have an eye on their navel. Up here, it was cold AND it was storming. Full “wall of white” from time to time. Now, I didn’t have to leave the driveway (did all that yesterday), but the lesson is clear. Find a more reliable source for my local forecast needs, and leave the winter tires in rotation for now.

Seemed like a great idea, to me. Skip that whole cooking process and find a nearby restaurant. Supper, at someone else’s expense (not exactly). Not to be; we’re on the cusp of a long weekend, and the nearby restaurant started their time away from the kitchen early this afternoon. I had no choice but to pick up my big knife and chop chicken and bell peppers. Fajita night, in spite.

Today’s new snow cover brought us a new show from the front window. One of those squirrels that has made camp in the treeline loves the free food, and when things were (unfortunately) covered, he took things in hand. A new series of tunnels, with pop-ups to check out horizon risks; he moved from hole to hole with amazing speed, and each hole marked a seedmine. Until the eventual melt, he’s got control of the larder.

Social does a wonderful job with warnings. Critical warnings. Do this NOW or ELSE! Today, one of our ebook readers was in focus. We have several around here, covering the various proprietary fiefdoms, and Kindle needed an update. Actually, the one here didn’t; we’re exceptional in that we keep devices up to the latest firmware whenever possible.

As I made a rapid course correction, around one of the new road obstacles, a sudden burst of wind took me from the side. And I realized that what I needed, on the car, was a sail. A supplement to the fossil fuel diet… Mentioned it to the storekeeper: “Do you sell sails?” His quick response was that my drifting into the path of oncoming traffic might qualify as a tack, but…

As part of our retirement package, we decided to “downsize” our community. From a metropolis to a small town; there are some interesting effects. We spent three decades with a cloak of anonymity (at least, I did). Able to go almost anywhere in the public sphere without crossing paths with anyone I recognized. Fast forward to our new abode. Out for lunch, and met two different groups of clients in the restaurant that I’d already met. Feels so much more like home, eh what.

Thank you, the famous ball player who gave us the perfect quote for a Canadian winter: “It ain’t over till it’s over”. This morning, when I was wandering around, outside, barefoot (had to untangle a dog and his lead from the bird feeder pole), I was willing to believe that we’d have to push new plants back underground. This evening, as the wind howls and a whole new layer of snow moves (sideways) past the deck rail…

A long weekend is hard on the spirit. Makes the calendar skip a step. That’s why, just after dawn, I was charging through the drifting snow in a mix of PJs and winter clothes, dragging huge blue plastic bags full of recycled milk cartons out to the the edge of the road. Our best garbage gets picked up once per month; if you miss the date, the pile grows anew. Happily, I was ahead of the truck (but not by much).

Well, it was thick as pea soup! You could cut it with a knife! Just a grey wall… I could find other analogies if needed, but the simple truth was that with the temperature up to 8C, we had to deal with the fog. Not me, personally; when the ferry came by, around noon, her foghorn was on. When a grocery trip to Montague ended up on the agenda (not for me), the drive down and back was challenging. And when I finally did go, to my community meeting, I had to keep it slow and steady through the bends; follow the yellow line.
