Insufficient payback will kill the print run

Call me responsible. In the good sense, as in “keeping an eye on things” rather than “to blame for what went wrong”. Language isn’t always precise. Anyhow, I decided to go and see if the weekend events had been well-received. Other than a downtick in attendance, it was. Hard to be sure if the crowds had stayed away because there was an event, or if they were just part of the end of the season.

Inspiration and aspiration

For a third, consecutive day, I returned to the lighthouse. This time around, I waited until after lunch, based on the premise that “maximum tourist numbers” don’t coincide with dawn visits.

Inadvertent cabling

With a job to do, I rolled out of bed before dawn. Managed to get away from the house without waking anyone else (including our overnight guests) and made the short drive over to the point. I was early; the team inside were still in sleeping mode. And so I did the obvious thing. I watched the sun rise. Glorious.

Paint splatter

Friday, and the “trumphant” sideshow continues. Another top advisor, cut loose. From here, a war by attrition. When there’s nobody left to impress, the man will take all his marbles and go home. I shouldn’t be concerned, as this is going on in another country. However, much like when an inexperienced house painted gets busy in a gale, the drops of pigment are flying everywhere. Onto the neighbouring house, for example. Until he runs out of paint, or the gales diminish, the rest of us had better wear protective clothing. Never has a ball cap seemed so necessary, before now.

Why this playlist?

The three of us (father, mother, son on a visit) went out to a community event, this evening. A concert of music by local students. And my son asked the inevitable question: Why is the playlist from the generation before the performers?

There might be better deals, but…

A good advertising slogan is one that can be recalled, many years later. A great slogan, then, is one that you can apply to another product without losing any of the punch. Case in point; “Mainly because of the meat!” For those who need to place this ear worm, it comes from the chain of Dominion Stores (the only supermarket I could name until I graduated from middle school).

Those pesky logfiles

There’s no secret here. When you visit a website (any website) you leave traces behind. In technospeak, you are entered into a log file, which allows the interested (usually just diligent system administrators) to tell “from whence came the anonymous visitor”. Gives an address and timestamp. Given the millions and millions of entries generated, 24/7, this amounts to digital noise.

Better in a blue bag

Why don’t I start by showing you a photo that is whimsical. Can’t find a better word. Not sure who to credit for this; it came up on Twitter, but I’m willing to learn basic stained glass skills just to reproduce this in a more appropriate medium.

Bland supper

This evening, supper will be fish cakes. Nothing home made; these are the factory model. Even the dog isn’t particularly interested in my choice. Maybe with some butter, and a mustardy sauce, I can turn this into something beyond bland.

Fascinated by the anecdotes

Spent the afternoon at the fire hall. No emergencies were handled; this was the only common room space available for our monthly book-in-progress club. It takes a community to properly draft a local history, and I’m fascinated by the anecdotes that come out. Triggered by a name or a relationship, folks remember things they heard “back when” that would never bubble to the surface if a simple request for stories was made.
