Inspiration and aspiration

posted in ham radio |

For a third, consecutive day, I returned to the lighthouse. This time around, I waited until after lunch, based on the premise that “maximum tourist numbers” don’t coincide with dawn visits.

Part of my reason for getting involved with the amateur radio portion (of this weekend) was to find inspiration. Four decades into the game, I needed a push. Happily, I did see some new techniques in use, and I realize that I can try different, experimental modes with the gear I have on hand. No need to dig into the proverbial piggy bank. I just need to read (a little) and then see how well things work for me. The world of satellites and low-signal modes are possible, from here, with what I already understand.

There was a certain social aspect to the event; I met up with people who have been licensed for the same number of years as me. We also paid a visit to a nearby house. The former lighthouse op “played with radios”, a generation ago, and there are numerous pieces of vintage gear. Some go back (almost) to the “dawn of time”.

As well, one of the other hams had arrived with a large trailer, filled (literally) with old radio gear. He frequents estate sales, and carries off prizes. I understand the instinct. Hey, maybe I should watch for bargains! I’m going to practice restraint (for now), but there are still keys to collect. I also have aspirations to a better antenna farm, so wire will be needed. Nothing shorter than a football field length.
