In the dark, with discord

Another sleepy Saturday. I did get up, for a while. Even went to town for breakfast. Or as I refer to it, bacon with sides. And after we’d exhausted conversation possibilities with our tablemate, we headed off to the market to replenish staples. For the dog, at least. To run out of biscuits would be a tragedy.

Automatically update? Maybe

I wasn’t going to watch. But, it’s like they say about train wrecks; you can’t not watch. And so, promptly before noon, I let CBC take me along on their efforts to capture the news. There’s a new sheriff in town. He walks with a real swagger. And then I returned to regular programming. Or in my case, a good movie. After all, you have to balance the ridiculous with the best efforts of Hollywood.

Fueled by memes and biscuits

In a world fed by memes, my favourite from today shows a privet hedge. A quiet announcement that Canada was building a wall; more precisely, growing a wall. However, the plants would have millions of discrete thorns, ready to deflate the ego of any politician that tries to cross in our direction.

Too much work

After a long afternoon, I’m ready to admit the inevitable. We’re not ready to put a Linux machine on the desktops of our neighbours, any time soon.

Map that, please

Around here, we have a certain number of GPS gadgets. Of course, we don’t travel with any of them; who would dare when the devices request that we update the maps, as soon as possible. Why, even when they were new, I remember crossing the wilds of NB and going for hours where no road “officially” existed. An act of faith, at least. Well, the whole issue of maps and misleading information is far from new. Here are two “finds” from the National Archives.

Reduce that pile

The provincial waste management system, with its arcane set of procedures comes with one really good feature. Once a month, I get to reduce the pile of cardboard boxes that accumulate here to something that can be moved to the curb. Strangely therapeutic, actually. Amazon delivers, and the big truck takes away.

A lockdown tale

Almost four years ago, we went on a little getaway to Montreal. Fun. Why I bring it up, now, is that I’ve finally seen the movie that explains the news stories from that period.

An aggravation

The risk with data mining is that “they” might notice me. I logged into my satellite provider’s website this afternoon, in part to check that our recent payment had been registered. And, while there, I decided to check on what it could cost me if I wanted to add a channel or two.

Serving Pi on the TV

I like pie. Raspberry Pi, that is. Have a few, destined to do great things if ever I decide to have a productive day. In fact, this afternoon my first dedicated unit went into play.

Computing, in common terms

For several weeks now, a team has been tasked with laying in the new extension cord that will tie our local power system back to the grid. A special ship came over from Europe and stayed on site until just a couple of days back. Seems that winter caught up with their effort.
