Automatically update? Maybe
I wasn’t going to watch. But, it’s like they say about train wrecks; you can’t not watch. And so, promptly before noon, I let CBC take me along on their efforts to capture the news. There’s a new sheriff in town. He walks with a real swagger. And then I returned to regular programming. Or in my case, a good movie. After all, you have to balance the ridiculous with the best efforts of Hollywood.
Fast forward to an essay on how I spent my afternoon. I’m determined to get that weather camera “active”. Had to reposition the physical contraption, to keep it from diving to the garage floor. But that was the easy part. Once I had files in known places, I had to figure out the transfer portion of my solution. Here’s the rub. Different operating systems talk to each other, but there’s often an “accent” to confuse matters.
My little Linux server is able to store files on another machine, but only within the confines of a single network. I can do the “share” thing now; had to read some really arcane prose to get to that point. It seems that my weather station software is unable to transfer a particular file to yet another server, though. I’m not convinced about that.
In the interim, I learned to write simple batch files (with CRON support) that store my new image files on a server located far away. I now have a working webcam/website page. Except for the “automatically update” part. I’m now working on tearing out my hair (in lieu of visiting a stylist), and perhaps, in the light of a new day, I’ll see the solution.
