In and out
This evening, I’m reassured about the quality of medical care locally. We arrived at the hospital this morning, right on schedule. That describes the rest of the day, as well.

I’m waiting, impatiently, for sundown. Early this afternoon I had a scheduled visit to the ophthalmologist (Hurrah!). One small side-effect though; my pupils have been about double-diameter for the last six hours. Really throws the concept of depth perception out of whack, and the light is streaming in to my poor retinas.

Our personal wildlfe refuge is getting crowded. Four hares, in a row. Five squirrels, ready to “tell me off” when I interfere with the feasting. Dozens of grackles, who flock together; move in their direction and they find reason to check out the neighbour’s (pale imitation) feast. We sprinkle sunflower seeds, everywhere. If ever they start to take root, our lawn will be a very different place.

Trying to trace a family tree leads to a corollary interest in history, particularly local history. I’ve been busily tracing my family (and yours, probably, if we are of more than passing acquaintance) for a quarter of a century now. Along the way, I’ve accumulated a lot of tidbits about time and place.

Classify me as bewildered. Up in the wildfire zone, there are people who refuse to leave. When the premier of your province announces that “you aren’t supposed to be there”, due to a general evacuation, the proper protocol seems clear. Get on a bus, or find a pickup truck with an empty back; get out of town. No, you aren’t doing something extraordinary and wonderful by hanging around in the danger zone. Rant mode off.

For a while now, we’ve noticed an interesting tendency. Locally, if one business seems to be running successfully, there will be copycats. Just whisper “Fro-Yo” in the city… Today, a second flower shop opened in town. Has there been a prediction of a sudden upswing in the frequency of “comings, couplings and departures”?

One of these days, I’ll get a lot of stuff done. And with the shock to my system, I’ll have to really retire. Today was another day without wonder, wherein my list remained as long at sundown as it was at sunrise. Not going to change the world, that way.

On the kitchen table, right now, an experiment in ecology. Two people, cutting a pile of newspapers into strips before wrapping an odd wooden cylinder; the goal, to make planter pots for use in a school project. Fascinating, really.

Based on what I’ve been reading on social media for the last bit, we are officially mobilized. Locally. There seems to be a dognapper making the rounds in an identified car, stopping in yards to offer rides to young dogs. No, not a van…

I didn’t witness the attack, but a small hawk came very close to getting fresh squirrel for the main meal of the day. Here, this afternoon. A low, silent swoop. That cage, hanging in the front yard, might be the safest spot around for the lads. Not much room for more than a couple at a time, though.
