A new wind record, as the cups spun up to 68 kph this morning. There was little doubt that conditions were windy, when the dog refused to go outside and puddled in fear. Wait until later in the week, when we’re promised even better. Not exactly kite weather, and the sea was white, as far as the eye could see (not far, what with the driving rain, but that’s anothconditioner story).

While the data elves stir today’s gleanings from the various genealogy sites, I’ll take a pause to get my post written. I’ve taken on (yet another) basic family tree research for a friend, but the going is slow. Until this time last year, the provincial archives were always there, to give me alternate views into the records. Now, I’m down to my own resources and Google. Not willing to spend money with the Ancestry people, just yet.

Had to use today to visualize a week without transportation. With other family planning to travel, after second-guessing the weather for the next few days, I had to make sure that there was sufficient food on hand to get through the “no car” period. I’ve done this before, just not recently. With three decades of a market within jogging distance, I’d lost good habits. Time to regain control.

There was pressure applied, of the psychological variety. A job, that had to be done, by me. And so, faced with an increasing level of timely reminders, I decided to get busy. Found a nail, and a studfinder. Measured and checked the level (pointless, really; only one nail). All to hang a clock, in exactly the right place.

Maybe it was due to the subliminal suggestion, implanted during last evening’s weather forecast. Or perhaps a restless dog, anxious not to miss a moment of a new day. Whatever; I was up before dawn, in time to see the crescent moon, Mars and Saturn in conjunction. Pretty, even if I still have no idea how to capture the image for posterity.

Just because we lived for decades in the city, one shouldn’t assume that we have no woodsense. Today, faced with a wonderful opportunity to wander off-road with the dog, we dress appropriately. We carried a GPS (actually a smartphone, but let’s not quibble over details). And, we went only where the snow was virgin. That way, we could follow ourselves back out of the woods. Or walk in circles. No, the dog would never have accepted that as appropriate behavior.

I’m trying to smooth out some errors in a large database, and the exercise feels exactly like when I’ve had to apply a screen protector to a smartphone: so many bubbles… I’ll get the job done, but in the interim, I’m blurring out.

What a day it has been. Consider a ride on a merry-go-round, or a roller coaster, or one of those combo affairs: a Tilt-a-Whirl? Not sure, but one of those contraptions that causes dizziness. Today was binge day, for the final season of Downton Abbey. A sixth season, where my hopes of having the servants assist in the dressing for dinner never faltered.

In a small community (like this one), there’s a thin line separating neighbour from cousin. This afternoon, we had an acquaintance over for lunch, and in one of those odd moments while talking, certain names and places aligned. Almost like range lights, coming into a harbour.

Soon be time to go to bed (says the clock). I’m not ready, yet. This was an “out of the house” evening for the gang, as we headed into the city for a sit-down meal with a group of old friends. Old being relative, of course. Even though the first contacts were made more than four decades ago, none of us are old. A little gray. A few physical reminders of where we’ve been and what we’ve seen. But, I insist, none of us are old. Check back in a year or two.
