Cue silence

Some things take longer. Things like booting an older Mac, when one (OK, me) has to burn an image file of an older version of software, after finding a suitable DVD (dual layer) and a DVD burner (ditto on the dual). Let that run while I cooked supper (USB 2.0 is slow). Then, I had to figure out what the correct response might be when the installer wanted me to go with GUID. Huh? That choice was buried in a sub-submenu, but now the machine is formatting and installing. Slowly. Based on observations to this point, I’m not dealing with a “speedy package” here.

Trying to judge the suitable level of effort

How much effort should I put into reviving an old computer? Some hardware doesn’t stop working prematurely, and a machine can still do the jobs it did in [fill  in the year] today, as long as the software is still available. I’ve got a few “veterans” around the house, much to the chagrin of others. Now to justify the storage space and effort. This afternoon, I plugged in an old Mac, but the install disk I have on hand won’t work with this machine. I’m sure I can still purchase a solution, but the box works fine in Linux. Do I really need an apple as a working solution, when there are Windows and Linux boxes to take up the workload? Is this an “intellectual” exercise?

Darkness veils the pool filling efforts

I returned, before dawn, to surreptitiously filling the pool. Nobody noticed, and by the time my morning coffee expressed, the pool was full. Now we can begin the dance of adding chemistry and waiting for the waters to clear. Can’t help the temperature.

A shiny new pump

Out of bed, early, with a plan. Get the dog out from under the bed clothes and check if the bagels were still fit for anyone other than the dog. Silly… dogs don’t like bagels unless the human spreads cheese first. With that detail clear, on to other items on the list.

Maybe with a fisheye

After a confusing double-header session with chat windows, involving a cousin and a sibling, here’s the thing. An honest politician is hard to find, and vacations are too short.,

The balance of underpayment and overpayment

How does that song go? “In the end, it really doesn’t matter”. It doesn’t. The season of American Idol is ending, right now. On another channel. Once again, a rerun of TBBT is more important.

Subtitles evolving into “study notes”

Used to be, a movie came on, and you watched it. Done. If the movie happened to be in foreign language, there might be subtitles. Again, done. But in a world with short attention spans and so much more information, they’re starting to “study note” certain of the better efforts.

The rankness of the beginner

Ninety minutes of bliss. A concert slash making of documentary with Alan Doyle, wherein we learned about his recent (and first solo) effort, Boy On Bridge. I want to watch it again, right now, it was so good. The man is one of the rare ones, and he surrounds himself with some classy talent.

Threading a needle

Almost had a wardrobe malfunction today. That’s where a button threatens to seek out new surroundings, without prior notice. In this case, I became aware of the lengthening cord between the button and me, and was able to intervene with a skill learned before I could ride a bike. After all, my time in the Scouting movement taught me enough basic tailorship to thread a needle, anchor my effort and lap until done. That’s enough to get me through the crises of existence in a world of wear.

Basics in zymurgy

Today, I learned a little about bitterness. Not enough to change my view of mankind, though. And the measure is quantifiable. Science. All because of a holiday.
