The calendar belies the real state of climate change. Think about it. With ten days to run before equinox, the winter has almost run its course. Temperature today: 10C. In the forecast: 50mm of rain. Not 50cm of snow! The odds of a St. Patrick Storm: dropping quickly. The driveway: already showing pebbles. All positive.

Two possible titles: “I don’t get it”, or “Warfare is a young man’s game”. On the TV screen, something involving running through an urban park, with background sounds of gunfire. Lots of gunfire. And on a regular basis, the screen flashes red, and things seem to reset. And we’re back to running through the park. Or the subway. It changes.

In preparation for the adjustment of time, I rolled back things this afternoon. I’m not a believer in this twice yearly ritual of resetting a dozen clocks (it doesn’t “save” time, and science has shown an increase in heart attacks and pedestrian accidents as a result of the tampering with nature). And so, when offered the chance to watch (rewatch) Indian Jones and the Temple of Doom…

As a child, I missed out on the “team” experience. No baseball team. No hockey team. Nobody had a soccer team (it was PEI in the early ’60s), No tug of war team. I didn’t have close neighbours, or a dozen brothers. No need to pick a position. I was, by definition, a loner.

Try not to get too attached to things in this world. Especially to data. Another case, today, of a large hard drive that has failed without warning. No recovery possible (I tried).

For the record (almost a record, but I may have got there earlier, once before), I was early to the office. One bus caught another, due to the downturn in clientele from the schools being “on break”, and I arrived more than a half hour early. Did anyone notice? Or applaud? Not even.

Good thing that our office telephones ring occasionally. Not from the point of “I sure wish someone would call”, but from the point of “Oh, someone in another cubicle is speaking.” Quiet workplace. No excitement. No shouting at one another. Not even an occasional POS (public outburst of song). Almost too professional. Almost a textbook example of boring.

Given that time goes by faster than before (although the science remains unclear), I no longer mind missed vacations as much as I used to. What’s a week off worth, really? I’ve been put in the position (without negotiation) of working this week, while others are absent. Are they basking on a tropical shore, or racing downhill on melting snow? Don’t care. The work week is already down to 80% remaining.

Talk to me. Here, in the microphone. And that’s where the budget goes out the window.
My new online course has begun, and I’ve spent the afternoon learning a little about choosing microphones. Arcane. More than a science, if you hold with the various reviews and guides out there. It seems that there is a perfect microphone, but it was locked away in a vault, a long time ago, and they only bring it out to record the greatest artist. Since that crown is wanted by many and held by nobody, the mike has not been seen within living memory.

Thanks to cable TV and low budget weekends, the occasion rises to watch some truly odd cinema. The kids say I don’t have to give in, but sometimes the moment is “too good to miss”. This afternoon, I watched a recent “straight to cable” movie, Battleship.
