Speak into the mike
Talk to me. Here, in the microphone. And that’s where the budget goes out the window.
My new online course has begun, and I’ve spent the afternoon learning a little about choosing microphones. Arcane. More than a science, if you hold with the various reviews and guides out there. It seems that there is a perfect microphone, but it was locked away in a vault, a long time ago, and they only bring it out to record the greatest artist. Since that crown is wanted by many and held by nobody, the mike has not been seen within living memory.
The rest of us have to go with two important principles in choosing a purchase. Price and availability. Take neither for granted. I have realized that my wants (and needs) are far beyond my budget, so for the next while I’m going to dream about what it would be like to own something that actually recorded what I (used to be able to) hear.
Another interesting thing that the course has pointed out is that I’ve accumulated a lot of background knowledge over the years. Thank you to the person that taught me my basics (you know who you are). Nothing the instructor has mentioned so far contradict your teaching.
Somehow, my proud purchases of used 635A microphones are less impressive, now that I’ve learned about ribbons and condensers and other such things. I know; I did see the 635A used in an old music video, but that was then and this is now. And I’m going to spend a lot of time watching what people sing into, for the next few months.
