A new class of “speak and spell” drivers

Times have changed. For the better, in large part. Bus seats are padded with a sort of corduroy that keeps me from sliding out into the aisle when we corner too quickly. Grocery carts are just deep enough that my load of groceries doesn’t (slide out in the aisle when I corner too quickly). Everybody has wifi, and they’ve turned on security. OK, that’s not the best thing for those who need to surf for free, but at least wifi doesn’t require decoding chalk marks on the sidewalk.

Missed concerts give my sad face a workout

Wish I paid more attention to the various “show notices” around town. Due to getting the news too late, I’m missing a concert by Tim Chaisson, only minutes away. There: requisite sad face.

I recognized that hill

Sitting, watching something involving Rick Mercer, in a hamster ball, at Horseshoe Valley. And  the memories come flooding back.

Radio with a view

Permit me to perform a “happy dance”. The SDR project was tested this afternoon, and it worked! I now have a SoftRock Lite II Combined Receiver Kit, constructed according to plan and functional on 40 meters. For those of you who believe that a radio comes installed in your car or home cinema, take it from me that there are still people who like to start from scratch. When it works, your new radio becomes YOUR new radio, and the emphasis is deserved.

Good football, but it has thrown my internal calendar for a loop

My internal clock is off by a whole day. Had to check the newspaper banner to make sure. I’ll lay blame with this afternoon’s football game (wherein the Rouge et Or proved to the upstart Carabins where the dynasty lives). What should be a Saturday activity, on a Sunday. You can understand my confusion.

Testing the shallow waters of SMT

Our curtain saga draws to a close. After a sprint last evening to finish the window for son #3 (daylight has interfered with his sleep pattern), I took the leap of faith and hung a spare vertical blind over the basement opening. Now, I can feign evening time at almost any moment of the day, in almost any room.

This is not a nuisance call

Time for a break in routine; how about calling 911, fifteen times in a row?

I did, and I did it for the “right reason”. Remember how I’m the designated telephone caregiver for my corporation? You didn’t? Doesn’t matter; I am, for better or worse. And after an incident, last week, where one of our schools called 911 and it rang into a different city, the word came down: investigate, and fix. The sequence might have been different, but I’ve been in this game long enough to apply a modicum of logical process.

The right of a monopolist

I’ve been on the phone for the last  forty minutes or so. With the phone company (and that’s important). You see, they called me.

Leadership races are like fantasy football

For my friends that feel I’m impatient, hear this. My SDR kits have been in the house for several days, and I haven’t tried to begin “building”. Yes, there have been other distractions, but I haven’t rushed headlong into anything. There. For the record.

Keeping an eye on time

It’s time. Forget all that business about digital, and accurate to within two ticks of something’s tail. I want to go retro. I want to wind my clock every few days; if I let my  duty slide, time will end. There. That should be enough to keep anyone on task.
