Talent and nostalgia

An afternoon of entertainment, lightly flavoured from the nostalgia jar, but involving talent that has proven that age makes no difference.

Green eggs and ham?

Given the auspicious date (a nod to my ancestors), I tried to celebrate with a traditional menu today. Unfortunately, we’re due for groceries, so the only option available would have been green eggs and ham. The work of Dr Seuss is important, especially if you raise progeny, but not particularly suited to a Celtic menu. I demurred.

Fame begat Glee

Dateline 1998. A movie where email is a star in the cast. The commercial actually used the sound of a modem, connecting. OK, the movie is a rerun, and the sound effect garners the comment that “Our children won’t even know what that sound was”. And the response “Those of us that do will have it in our nightmares until we die”.

The point of the meeting was?

Several days of rumour have given way to “the lead story on the news this evening”. As summer vacation draws to a close, if you are farsighted enough to put your money on the ticket counter in ten days time, and you enjoy the close companionship of tens of thousands, then you, too…

I need a few hours more per day

To those in charge of winter travel conditions: my neighbours and I are hardy. We will go out after a heavy snowfall, that hasn’t been plowed, and make our way to our destinations. However, if you throw in power failures that remove the calming power of the red light / green light sequence, things will quickly degrade. I was eleven minutes late for work. Can you sense the gloating nature? I was there before the rest of the team, because I put my faith in city transit and their big Tonka toys. Slide aside, tiny cars!

A do over as a rock star

If I had a do over, I’d want to be a rock star. Because, based on the premise of several other movies I’ve watched recently, the real Neverland is found on the bus going somewhere else, while the mates fight it out among themselves. Not quite paradise, but from what I remember of Peter Pan, the movie version, close enough for… no, I won’t say it.

Classics of rock and roll

In the cold of winter, the knock comes on the door. Bring out your money, because you need to buy a candle in a box. Indeed, another Bougie, to prepare us for the arrival of Carnaval. Inflation in place, I spent $10 for a small red candle with an implied dream. If it shows green inside, I’m one of the rare, lucky ones.

In discovery mode

Yes, I understand and respect the decorum demanded of parliamentarians. That said, sometimes you just have to call it as you see it. Thank you, Justin.

Shrinking your music collection to a suitable size

When the call came, I had flashbacks to the days when we rented videos. Please return the dog. Odd irony. And for the record, she (the dog) is hopeless at finding her toys when it’s time to travel.

A musical interlude

We interrupt this (your) life for a musical interlude. Regular programming will resume all too soon.

This evening: Leslie Feist. From Nova Scotia, in surfeit. A rolling stone, who manages to scrunch up the moss along the way. Ignore the iPod song, temporarily, because there is so much more. Art, photography (yes, art too), music, dance. The whole apple pie (ignore the iPod influence). I like what she does, even if I can’t find direction. My bad.
