Another day of second guessing the weather. Rain began around lunch time; now, five hours later, the sump hole remains dry. Why does that matter? Well, it IS winter, and the ground is frozen. Any new liquid precipitation has to go somewhere, and a basement is as good a goal as any. I’d hate to be surprised, so I’ll eyeball the situation until normal temperatures prevail. In passing, there is still no ice out in the Strait.

Sitting here, watching the visibility go from sketchy to null. Listening to the rattle of my world from the winds, and noting the passage of the plow, as the local operator does his best to keep “the roads open”. I didn’t have to go out today.

I know. It is crazy to want things you don’t need. A sign of what is wrong with our society, etc. But, looking to the weekend, I’m wishing the winds would shift (in this direction).

Seen this morning on Twitter: a request from the regional police, urging motorists to clear the snow and ice from their windscreens. How can this still be a thing? Are there those so confident in their navigational skills that they don’t need to see outside the car? I realize that an integrated GPS is a feature, but having tried to navigate from there to near there, I realize the downside of “visibility equal to null”.

“The wetter, the weightier”; unsure if the phrase obeys the laws of grammar, but that was my motivation for today. Overnight, the winds dropped, and the temperature went above freezing. Knowing that there is a system inbound with rain in the payload, I decided to push myself (just a little bit harder) this morning. Get up, get out and get busy!

I want a new tee, just for days like this. It will be white, of course, and will have printed (white-on-white) the following phrase: “Never fear, winter is here”. Today was a heavy weather day.

Today, my sunglasses were superfluous to the cause. This was a grey day, from top to bottom. Fog, rain, some freezing drizzle. All while we wended our way back to Quebec City.

Less than two weeks until the solstice. Getting up at an early hour (yes, seven in the morning qualifies) I can only take note that it is very dark outside. By suppertime (yes, five in the evening also qualifies) I can also take note that it is very dark outside. Do you see a pattern here? Assuming that you have access to artificial lighting, of course. The day doesn’t last long enough. Fast forward, please.

Recently, I came across a phrase that explains so much about how we encounter new media. In this case, the expression “fell down a rabbit hole on YouTube” is good enough to put on a teeshirt. Yesterday, I tested the efforts of “trad bands from the Balkans”. This afternoon, I reviewed the “test reel” of a film producer from our big city; where else would I find those commercials for auto glass and cupboards that fuel the local news? To be fair, I didn’t know the source of the clips (until now), and they are still rather good, even if the producer’s children are often found front and center. I guess you make use of what you are most familiar with.

So much for Saturday; the blowing snow brought an early cancellation to my late afternoon working session with the local community group. We were supposed to go down to the end of the road and take some measurements in the old fog horn building. That will have to wait. To be fair, I had the shortest distance to travel, and we aren’t actually planning to reactivate the noise maker. I’ll put this down to an early onset of seasonal weather, with a strong outlook of green fields in the next few days.
