Another iteration of white weather

posted in genealogy, Wx |

I want a new tee, just for days like this. It will be white, of course, and will have printed (white-on-white) the following phrase: “Never fear, winter is here”. Today was a heavy weather day.

Schools closed before things started, which means that someone is starting to learn how this seasonal weather works. We went from nothing (except some diffused daylight) to full-on falling snow in a matter of an hour (after first coffee). Enough time for the emergency run to town to get cinn-buns, thankfully.

I can’t tell you the total accumulation (because it isn’t done yet), but the deck has been cleared and is ready for a second pass with the shovel. Our snow guy is going through some personal health issues, so I haven’t seen/heard the big blue tractor, yet. He (or his proxy) may well be waiting for the morning.

Snow comes in many forms: today, sticky, small crystals, that coat windows and doors and dog fur completely. No drifting, yet, but there’s still the night.

You might wonder about my obsession with weather. Well, fortunately, that’s about the worst thing that happens around here. We’re safe from global warfare and home invasions, and even if the wifi is really third world in quality, we feel lucky to be in such great conditions. Whether our new windmills are going to change things will not be known until summer at the earliest.

I spent some time, today, going through census returns that trace the transfer of families from Arichat to Georgetown. New material, for me; I recognize some of the family names, but there’s no easy answers.
