Revisit the past? Probably not…

posted in genealogy |

In current genealogy circles, the DNA test is a hot topic. Either you want to trust a corporation to receive your little swab of spit, or you don’t. Nothing forces you. Stepping laterally, I learned from the press that the border authorities (to the south of us) are offering free spit swabbing, from a subset of those who want to enter the country. No mention about whether you get a family tree link. One small detail; declining the offer comes with other effects. I’ll leave you to study and see if it matches your own life plan.

Meanwhile, my own research is staying its course, and I rely on the abundance of information available online, and correlation with my own memory details. Right now, I’m reviewing old high school yearbooks, which provide names matched to birthdays and parents. Oh, and the pictures. Some of those people seem very familiar; they look just the way I remember. I have a nagging suspicion that this doesn’t reflect “the here and now”.

If I don’t look much like my yearbook picture from back before I had a driving license, it’s a fair bet that this is common to pretty much all of us. Other than that one person who still looks fifteen, fifty years later (really good genes, as they say). So much fun, though. What if I had access to a REAL time travel machine? Would I want to revisit my life, as it was?

Probably not. I’m older and wiser, and I wouldn’t fall for the same dimples, a second time around.
