Power bumps

A not so ordinary day. Shock and awe, natural style.

We’re in a period of unsettled weather; humidity through the roof, temperatures to make dogs pant, the odd bit of uncontrolled static electricity. After four power bumps since mid-afternoon, I’ve learned that one of our computers needs a new battery for the motherboard. Actually, I’m not used to surges. Back in high school, under the umbrella of OWLP, it was a given that thunder meant darkness. Here, not so much. The rest of the family actually got to leave their school early, when one bump saw (unsaw) electrical failure through half the building.

Halfway to having a sun shelter

Either you have it or you don’t. That’s the “divine right of kings” thing that keeps a certain group of kissing cousins richer than Croesus. And if you had it and then you didn’t, then you pull a Sarah. That’s the trick where you offer a meeting with the titled one in your marriage, in return for “£500,000”. So help me, you can’t make up this kind of stuff.

Feeding my new toy habit

A foregone conclusion; the final of AI9 will place Lee and Crystal in the same time-space continuum. Two talented performers, neither quite ready for the crown.

Ready to start the balancing act

The pool store is still the cheapest source of my chemical fix. I tried shopping around, but the other big box stores have figured it out for themselves. There is too little margin for places like Wallies and Canny Tire to waste valuable floor space on pallets of bad smelling powder.

The year that spring came on time

I’m not positive, but that bird that was “hippity-hoppity” on the street yesterday morning might have been a robin. Looking lost, given the snow still covering the local lawns, but a welcome harbinger of seasonal change. But there’s snow, you say? I can only take solace in knowing that my neighbours haven’t had to shovel the front yards, this time around. By the end of the weekend, the only sign of winter will be my snow tires.

Randomly unplugging my network

Off to work in the dark, as the clock change negates several months of solar progress. Oddly enough, the only province that has a purely agricultural vocation (SK) doesn’t bother with such patent foolishness. The older I get, the less I am accepting of legislative tomfoolery. My pardon to anyone named Tom.

Next time, please call earlier

I should have been standing by the side of the road, singing “Oh what a beautiful morning”. Instead, I found myself on the bus, stopped in the middle of the highway leading into the city, staring at a car headed in the opposite direction – my direction. Eye to evil eye. Just then, the announcer at CBC added my school board to the list of those already closed due to inclement weather. A matter of minutes make the difference between enjoying the whole storm day at home or on the road.

Warm weather signals an end to economic winter

All it requires is a single warm night for winter to be over. That is, according to retail marketing experts. My own calendar has some leeway.

Unpredictable elections and weather

Four evenings of the annual audition ordeal have passed. Last week, we had some useful input from the guest judges (Posh and Mary J Blige) but this week was a placeholder effort. I mean, come on. Shania Twain gave back polite platitudes to the Chicago supplicants, and Kristin Chenoweth (who?) didn’t even stay for the second segment of tonight’s effort from Orlando. Yawn.

Oh, for an ergonomic pew

I’m home again and I’m hungry enough to be ornery. A victim of circumstance and poor retail practices; why on earth are all the fast food places shuttered, hours before midnight on a weekend? I’ll settle for that old standby, a box of chicken wings from the freezer section; 17% protein and not much else.
