Warm weather signals an end to economic winter
All it requires is a single warm night for winter to be over. That is, according to retail marketing experts. My own calendar has some leeway.
Last night it rained. With the temperature hovering (like some diabolic UFO) at the freezing point, that new water did the logical thing. It froze, and then stayed wet. Coefficient of friction approaching zero (think calculus for the streets of the city). I slid to my bus stop and by the time my muscles had unknotted, the sand truck followed to make sure cars were safe.
This city isn’t flat, and the bus required a few minutes more than usual, in order to slide just past each potential passenger. Of course, my transfer bus was just behind us when we climbed the big hill, so I sprang from my seat, threw open the door and managed to stop near the next point of embarcation. Of course, my tuque and mitts missed the transfer.
No great discomfort, today; the temperature is abnormally seasonal (words from the weather site). But I know, as sure as rain becomes snow, that we will have more cold days before the warm returns. And I know how miserably cold the fingertips can be, when the bus is delayed. After a quick inventory of the glove basket, I went shopping.
On a Monday, I have the choice of Wallies or Cannies. Both are down to the final pairs of gloves for this season. The ones that didn’t sell, back before the snow came. Even those fancy fliptop mittens for hunters are now officially out of season and out of stock. I did find a couple of pairs near ground level at the back of a rack behind a pillar. And, I bought them both. It’s going to be cold again, soon.
