Dog-van testing

Riding in a new vehicle isn’t that tough. After all, I did get to change bus seats, a lot, along the way. And cars? Too many to count. But in our household, there’s one member that doesn’t talk much. This afternoon, we went for a ride, with the dog as the target of interest.

Getting some shots

Over the last four years, we’ve become lax about canine medicine. All is well, so why unbalance the system? But, on checking the regulations should our household stray into unknown territories, I decided to check the regulations about vaccines for the pooch. Specifically (but not exclusively) as to the required certificates against rabies.

At least they have cold air available

A busy day. We arranged for “doggy daycare” because it was far too warm for the dog to be in the car while we visited the city. Yes, it was far too warm for us, but we don’t pant as much. Anyhow, one of the summer neighbours came over, with her two yellow Labs and we left with new confidence.

We could jail the dog

I think I have figured out the puzzle about wildlife migrating into new places; they don’t follow people rules. Over supper (fries with the works, for the first time in about a decade), we started “what if” brainstorming. What if we went to Newfoundland? Did it before, had a great time, bla-bla-bla.

Can’t take him anywhere

The hairy fellow has certain shortcomings, in a social context. Why, just this evening, while we sat in the mall parking lot, he started his imitation of a gurgling fountain. And then he threw up. Of course, we’re now washing the back seat blanket.

Frozen solid

Home cooking explained in one phrase: “Why does fried fish taste so good and smell so bad?”

Life is filled with such mysteries. Why does the dog need to check the front yard at three in the morning? Why don’t I have the same sense of responsibility? And what about the birds? They’re here early and they stay late. Speaking of the birds, I was gobsmacked at the photo of a local hummingbird feeder, frozen solid. This morning. Did I open the calendar to the wrong sheet?

Will sticky work?

No need to search for a definition, when it comes to “muscle memory”. That’s where I go out, spend some time raking over the dead spots in the lawn until pain begins. The memory part: I remember why I shun the rake as an instrument of torture.

Avoiding a wobble

A special shout out to all those teachers who hint that learning goes on for a lifetime, not a semester. You’re right. Yesterday, I learned that those tiny spacer washer are not supposed to stay in place for the summer. Creates a wobble (in the wheel world). Now I know. Today, I learned how to paginate a large book. Good to know if you’re involved in any home brew publishing efforts. It’s pretty simple, actually. My software has a button labelled “add page numbers” and that exactly (all) it does. Doesn’t skip digits unless you request the option (as it creates a wobble in the publishing world).

Think they chased the bunny

Given the absence of new chocolate around the house, I have to assume that the famous bunny missed his stop. No surprise, really. We were up, mid-way through the night, watching a number of coyotes out in the driveway. Scared us, and bunnies aren’t any braver.

In my lab

In my ongoing round of research in organic chemistry, I’ve “set” my third batch of yogurt. The first time, I followed protocol; scalded milk, cooled slowly to a precise temperature; added the package of prepared culture from the organic chemistry store in the city; waited the prescribed twelve hours. Result? Fair. A bit soupy. Still good to eat.
