Saving to buy an air freshener

Just in time for the long weekend (and the two week vacation that follows), the government has announced the end of funding for CAP sites and Katimavik. The former provided public Internet access across Canada, and the latter showed a generation the value of public service. Not any more. The savings from closing the CAP access should pay for something more important; say, a pine tree shaped air freshener for one of those new jets. And why allow people to work for (almost) free, when you’re “creating jobs for Canadians”. Unfair competition.

Cost overruns

A day later, and my mental health has improved. Still need a vacation, but the panic that there might not be one, (really really soon) has passed. All it took was getting “caught up” in my cubicle.

Availability of maps for the old school

As we’re forced to move from 32-bit to 64-bit versions of our favourite software, I lift my virtual hat to the gang at Google. Today, they released an 8-bit version of Google Maps, for the cohort of “old technology”. Here’s the view of the Maritimes.

Dodging a bullet

When I least expected it, the communion of language and music left me breathless…

Jake – “All this foolishness over a fiddle”.
Finn – “It’s a violin“.

Cold? Stormy? Normal!

Might be getting older, but I’m not getting any brighter. This is Canada, and this is March. Those days of sunshine and snow melt were just an illusion. What magicians refer to as the “prestige” (I think).. The windchill this morning of -18C, and the knock down drag them take no prisoners snow blow down on the Island were just normal observations. Weather can’t be predicted…

Awaiting the fourth ballot

My opinions are not universally accepted. Not even in my own home. Learned that, last evening, when I expressed my sentiment about the proposed tuition hike. I stood alone.

Unlimited cold milk – a lifetime highlight

The story that Kraft Foods was  planning a rebrand left me confused, after listening to the suppertime news. Thankfully, I was able to Google my confusion away. KD will remain KD, which means that No-Name hasn’t won the battle for the MacNCheez meal just yet. Imagine the chaos, if a generation of university students were no longer able to find food.

Awed by the lights and sirens

Standing beside the gas pump (a vulnerable location, both physically and economically), aware of the freezing rain falling just beyond the canopy. Suddenly, sirens and a full light show, as a police car followed by a fire truck race past, ignoring the red light at the corner. Gets the adrenaline going, I have to tell you. What if?

But was it faster than light, officer?

Touch and go there, for a while. The most expensive science experiment in the world recently reported that they had clocked subatomic particles (a scientific way of saying “really, really tiny”) moving at faster than the speed of light. Which would have cancelled out everything I learned in high school science class, among other things. But, after some recalculation and finger twisting, the observation was scaled back. Loose cable leading to faulty readings.

Too much broccoli

Time to dig out the cookbook that deals with odd ingredients. As part of the loyalty program at my local supermarket, we get free stuff. Not much, not really things of value. More a case of what is overstocked. Like the week they gave us pomegranates. This time around: broccoli.
