Cheap but inspired cables

Boomer treated us to a new mashup of word during the weather forecast this evening: “tornadic vorticities”. As soon as I decipher the term, I’ll post a definition.

The first solid precipitation

I took part in an interesting discussion this afternoon. When writing a local history, should it be approached as a simple compilation of facts, or is there a place for new research? I mean, there’s always the hope of new material, but when faced with a production timeline that has to be respected, how does the editorial aspect apply?

Trivial and other team sports

Team trivia is far from trivial. On a September Saturday, it’s the “only game in town”, and we take it seriously. Tonight, I won a chocolate bar, and had several hours of chatter for the sum of $2 – a bargain in these troubled economic times. Now I’m home, wondering when the next game will take place, as we watch a pair of cruise ships cross paths just offshore.

The right bit

I think I missed today’s “event”. Rather a long name for something that didn’t catch my eye: lunar penumbral eclipse. Even after some time on Google, and a quick read of the relevant documents, I accept that some things are less than evident.

The not-so-deserted beach

That whole image of a deserted beach where you can wander with your dog? Not around here. I picked the most isolated corner I could easily reach by car, parked down at the end of the lot and yet we still had to do the nose-to-tail thing with other people’s dogs. Great sand, though. You may have heard that you can’t go to the beach without dragging some sand home with you. True.

Bring a wrench

The distance from “Come look at this” to squatting on the floor, disassembling a table was shorter than I would have guessed. Required going home to unload the groceries and find an adjustable wrench, actually. Still not sure of all the details, but I’m involved in a transfer of furniture from one place to another; I’ll be better able to figure things out when that table is back on its four legs.

Clamp work

Another quiet afternoon. A neighbour was changing address, so the car and usual driver were conscripted to assist. Leaving me, fueled by cold pizza, to learn about the craft of gluing wood. I had received a basic education, back in the 60’s, but that hardly counts.

A ruler of a proper length

My quest, yesterday, to find standard measuring tools, reminded my of something on my own search list. I have a need for a ruler that is “one foot short of a yard”. In steel, so that it won’t change length suddenly, or something. As we happened to be in a high-class craft shop, earlier today, I thought I’d try and find one.

If only I knew the specs

Today, it was my turn to “take one for the team”. Second time in several weeks, actually. My afternoon, in glorious weather, was spent trying to control a small parking lot during a community function.

New blades

A forecast, maybe a promise, even a hint of rain can change the direction of a day. For us, knowing that the car would be classed as temperate by the vigilantes who believe every dog is in danger, this was a good day to get to the city and take care of things. Little things, like getting new wipers for the car. Larger things, like major phone upgrades. All on the list.
