The calendar brags about the seasonal change; the weather forecast belies the condition. Still warm outside, and we’re not ready to throw frost blankets over the garden. At least not for the next few days. Things change; usually faster than desired.

I don’t know much about “product distribution networks”, given that I tend to buy retail. What I do know is that other places get access to cool stuff before we do. I’ve had my eye on some new gear for the last couple of weeks; saw the announcements, twigged that it was something I’d like to own, checked the price point, etc.

Call me responsible. In the good sense, as in “keeping an eye on things” rather than “to blame for what went wrong”. Language isn’t always precise. Anyhow, I decided to go and see if the weekend events had been well-received. Other than a downtick in attendance, it was. Hard to be sure if the crowds had stayed away because there was an event, or if they were just part of the end of the season.

A good advertising slogan is one that can be recalled, many years later. A great slogan, then, is one that you can apply to another product without losing any of the punch. Case in point; “Mainly because of the meat!” For those who need to place this ear worm, it comes from the chain of Dominion Stores (the only supermarket I could name until I graduated from middle school).

Trying to help people, in family tree searching, comes with a caveat. The information offered is never enough. Someone posted a query about a particular family, and I returned with several generations of data for the couple. The reply? “Do you have the actual marriage record?”.

Two days running, with big warnings and ominous clouds. Followed by nothing. I’m back in from the BBQ, watching more fog roll in. The hummingbirds were busy behind me; I paid little attention to the reddish hue of my tee. They don’t attack (do they?)

While I wait for my hummingbird nectar to cool (boiling water, not good for birds), I find myself wondering. Is that visitor at the window aware that the feeder is in the kitchen? Am I under surveillance by something with a brain no larger than a chickpea? Scary.

“But, above all, take care of yourself.” Like a creature? No, like a bank.
Today, I learned a little more about self-preservation, in the financial sense. Several days ago, I deposited a sum of money, electronically, to my bank. With the goal of “making a payment” to that same bank. No plan to save, or spend with abandon. And, to be fair, the bank had advertised that I could deposit funds, all by myself. You can guess the outcome; the funds were “frozen”.

Unlike yesterday, where my awakening was too early for my own good, I didn’t roust out today until the telephone rang. The car was ready, and I was the anointed one. Get dressed, walk up the way and pay what was due. At least the temperature was up; no danger of frostbite. Car repairs cost what they cost, but the fee schedule locally is very (very) reasonable. Besides the “support your local merchants” feel good part, the only repairs effected are those required. I know, we’ve tried to see if there could be other jobs to get done. Nope. Our shocks are just fine.

Winter is over. I’ve made sure, by going over and paying off my snow removal contract for the season. Any further accumulation can just hug the ground until the melt finishes. Am I afraid of a sudden resurgence? Nah.
