Stir until the solids float free

I am part of the generation that stopped making and started buying food. My grandparents had no problem with a routine that involved baking bread, collecting milk and eggs, slaughtering the livestock for meals or laying up a supply of preserves. Then, about the time I was born, such things simply stopped. My mother made bread on occasion, and we did have a cow for a short time, but the rest of the routine that went with life in rural PEI was no longer necessary.

If only the sun could shine effectively

The article, deep in the daily newspaper, was akin to a bank of clouds overhead on an otherwise sunny day. In our city, due to a municipal regulation aimed at saving me from myself, the installation of solar panels is forbidden. No shadow of a doubt like in other cities where “out of sight, out of mind” is the policy. Here in the Capital, the idea of a green alternative to Hydro (owned by another level of government) is enough to see you declared an outlaw.

Mixed nuts

Some movies are harder to watch than others. We have just finished Hotel Rwanda which is something that will reinforce one’s belief in the goodness of others. At the same time, you may despair for the base nature of the human race. Not all is noble and kind. Recommended.

Bleak forecasts

The Internet. Where only fear reigns supreme. If it sounds like the tagline from an upcoming movie, it’s because I have big plans for the rest of you. That is, if they don’t turn off the lights and hide my share of the world’s plastics first.

Light followed by dark

We spent the day acting as tourist guides under a cloudy sky. This is a beautiful city, and it helps to get out and about from time to time and just enjoy the view. A chance to see the old city with new enthusiasm. In fact, we even went for a ferry ride, where you can see the postcard views that the city is known for. Followed by a funicular ride. All in the same day. A fun day.

Putting on the old routine (well-worn clothes)

The excuse of being on vacation doesn’t hold much water when the travel part is over. It’s time to get “back in the saddle”, time for putting on the old routine (well-worn clothes). Time to put the house in order.

Breaking the illusion that the house is too small

Part of the founding principle for the real estate industry is that the average homeowner wants to “trade up”. Better location, sure, but more room to stretch out. Bigger digs. I’ve just found a way to destroy any illusion that you need a larger home; try finding something you “put away for the winter”.

I’m on the conservation bandwagon

Although I haven’t seen any palm trees nearby, or sensed that the glaciers are melting in the neighbourhood, I agree that it’s time to be a little more rational in my use of energy. I am one small bean in a larger pot of chili, but there is a body of scientific knowledge that reassures me my efforts, at least, won’t hurt.

I knew it was good for me

Should you happen to share your home with any animal, you will have noted that a great deal of energy is spent in the structure of sleeping. Seriously, try to find a pet that doesn’t “own” the most comfortable bed in the house, and that doesn’t make the best possible use of time and place. There may be a reason; animals aren’t “born lazy”.

Not exactly a war story

My good friend, Mr. Eastwood, has been involved in interesting cinema for about as long as I’ve been a movie goer (let’s not quibble over the minor detail that I no longer go to the movies; the movies come to me). From that ride in the back of JT’s Scout to see one of the sphagetti westerns, through Play Misty For Me (might be the only true scary movie), around the corner past any punk that might want to make my day, and more, and more. As he ages, he also seems to be developing the sort of conscience that permits him to tweak the elephant’s long nose.
