Breaking the illusion that the house is too small

posted in environment |

Part of the founding principle for the real estate industry is that the average homeowner wants to “trade up”. Better location, sure, but more room to stretch out. Bigger digs. I’ve just found a way to destroy any illusion that you need a larger home; try finding something you “put away for the winter”.

Sometime last year I stored the various parts of my backyard swamp. I’m not referring to the big tanklike affair, or the overgrown sand drum. No, the smaller parts, such as the pump, various plastic gadgets, brushes. The pool stuff, to be generic. And now that the grass has started to grow again I’ve reversed the routine, bringing the pieces back outside and clamping everything together into a working Rube Goldberg contraption that uses too much energy. In fact, I purchased a timer last year, just to be a little greener without growing too much green in the watery area of the yard.

And there’s the rub, for in that sleep of winter, the timer seems to have left for elsewhere. I’ve searched. High and low. Behind the freezer, in the tire pile, down in the bookpile, over by the camping pile. As my search continues, the house seems larger and larger. How could there be so many places to hide junk?

I used to have a dream system. In university residence, everything was in one of three places. Sometimes, things I sought would even be in the first or the second place, restoring my belief that I did file things neatly. Now, with this huge abode, I have so many places to put my stuff that I frequently can’t find the target of a given search in spite of all I’ve learned about hunting for hidden treasure. I have to go out and buy more stuff at Canny Tire on weekends.

Well, I haven’t given up yet. After I buy some new flashlight batteries and have a meal to garner the needed energy I will continue to hunt my missing pool timer. After all, there are months before I have to store stuff for another year.
