Today, I was reminded to call the provincial registry for those of us without a family physician. Called, left my number on the answering machine, went back to my routine. When the phone rang, several hours later, I was prepared to spell my name and the other usual tra-la-la; imagine my surprise, on giving my name, to learn that I had just been added to the list for the new doctor (arriving next month). Hurrah!

During the opening ceremonies from Rio, a great deal of emphasis was placed on demonstrating how this was a nation poised for a turn towards “green”. Now that the diving and swimming pools are changing colour, going green if you will, that might not be what the organizers had in mind.

I’ve found another chapter of my “story” in a recent book. The Glenalladale Settlers are working hard to find the identities of those who sailed into a small Island harbour, back in 1772. Finally, a detailed list of the passengers has allowed me to “find” some more of my forebears. Cool!

As the days go by, the obvious menu for summer on PEI involves fish. Fresh, frozen; that part is important to the kitchen staff. On my plate, what matters is the texture. Oh, and the tartar sauce.

Climate change; for real. Now we can grow grapes, right in the neighbourhood. That’s a sign that we’re soon going to rival Europe for fine wines, right?

Waiting to enter the road from my driveway, I rarely wait for traffic. One, two vehicles tops. This morning, after more than two dozen cars had passed, and I finally had a gap, I noticed something really special. Not one of the clean, recently painted rigs was even built in this century. Totally against all odds, I was the odd one out in a classic car convoy.

“Hey kids! Let’s put on a show!” the quote goes back to the 1939 move Babes in Arms, but it has a place right now. I’ve just spent in excess of four hours, watching the opening ceremonies for the 2016 Olympics. Every four years, two if you count the seasonal split, the Games inspire an evening of entertainment that never fits a formula.

When I first started trying to deal with my “need” to own more lenses for my camera, I also had to deal with the prices. Here in Canada, gear was expensive (and we had a limited number of places to actually shop). However, a friend of mine had a really neat catalog, wherein we could order photographic equipment at very reasonable prices. Two catches: we had to do our own negotiations with the customs office, and the shipping was, literally, via slow boat from China.

My quest, yesterday, to find standard measuring tools, reminded my of something on my own search list. I have a need for a ruler that is “one foot short of a yard”. In steel, so that it won’t change length suddenly, or something. As we happened to be in a high-class craft shop, earlier today, I thought I’d try and find one.

Once the kids got out of the school system, we stopped having to purchase certain things. Today, I was sent off to find what we used to call a “geometry set” and a pencil sharpener. Still early in the back-to cycle for merchants; I did fill my list, but I learned a bit more about the difficulties for a retailer in that domain.
