Turns out that there is a test for newcomers: ask them to correctly sort their trash with a minimum of rebagging. We’ve read the brochure, asked advice at the hardware store, considered the logical implications of mixing a cereal carton with a newspaper… and we’re probably going to have to hire a tutor. Or a sorter.

A new address is a good reason to update the ID envelope. This morning, I received a new driver’s permit, and made the “official” request for a local health card. Both required, if I want to get full value for my tax dollar.

A popular TV series, from a number of years back, had a theme that mentioned being in a place where everybody knows your name. Home, in simpler terms. This afternoon, as we wandered this area, I had that sentiment. People called me by name (for the record, it’s not “Hey, you!”). It felt good.

Welcome to the rural channel, where you always have neighbours, after a fashion. I’m unpacking the car, and somewheres off to the left, a party is in progress. Not the kind I’m accustomed to; here the language consists of yips and yowls, punctuated by shork barks. Be they red, or be they grey… I won’t be sure until I see their play.

This has turned out to be a very long day. Too much to do, on someone else’s timetable. Now to ignore the myriad ache points and try something civilized: sleeping.

I received my wakeup call sometime before sunrise; seems that my stomach was “too noisy”, and I was asked to go elsewhere. Which actually turned out to be a good thing, as I was fully awake when the doorbell rang. Nothing about noise. Rather, two men on a mission: to pack my kitchen away for travel.

You can’t keep both of them! All of my friends and family have made that clear. And so, this morning, I made the big decision. From now on, my real desire gets my full attention; someone else will take care of the rest.

The end is near. When I transferred my clothes and two historical atlases into an oversized carton, the whole thing suddenly got real. Not that I need constant access to my polo collection, but that the sudden urge to check who lived in Lot 16 is on hold until next week.

Used to be, when you put a stamp on a letter, that effort paid for delivery. Even if your address changed. Not any more; today I “signed up” for a year of forwarding (junk mail, more than anything else). Just short of $10/mth, the amount is highly symbolic, but it shows how we no longer get the service we used to.
