A party in progress

posted in travel |

Welcome to the rural channel, where you always have neighbours, after a fashion. I’m unpacking the car, and somewheres off to the left, a party is in progress. Not the kind I’m accustomed to; here the language consists of yips and yowls, punctuated by shork barks. Be they red, or be they grey… I won’t be sure until I see their play.

We left our motel room after coffee (continental breakfast for the speedy diner). Great travel weather. The unfinished highway soon gave way to the super highway of the drive-through province. We’ve made this trip before. No unnecessary stops. No detours. Other than the mandatory refueling, we simply stayed on task, all the way to the other side (of the bridge). As a winter footnote, I think I spotted some snow in a hedgerow. That matters little.

We stopped in to dine with friends of Albert and Walter before checking out the new Canny Tire palace. Big. Beautiful. A long stride from their original quarters downtown, where the guy behind the counter had all the answers. This time around, we did our own find and fetch: a boy bed, a dog bed, some temporary chairs, a flea/tick collar (according to the newspaper, more than an afterthought). Bought milk and cinnamon rolls, of course. And then we headed east.

I could hear the house as we got out of the car. Not a great sign, but the problem turned out to be minor. An oscillating flow indicator. Something to mention to the HVAC guru. The deck has been placed, along with front step footings, and I had an email about the status of all that.

We’re going to have to get the collective mentality tuned into the new garbage rules. More classes. Different containment procedures. Should we keep two or three bins in the kitchen? What about odours? Newbs…

And so now I’m waiting for the floor to warm and the mattress to swell. Modified camping, until the house contents catch up with us. Read through a couple of flyers (found in our new mailbox) for data services, quickly realizing that their offers might keep me satisfied for a long weekend. Hope the big players have better plans.
